EXCERPT of SECOND CHANCE SUCCUBUS
Night noises consistent with a desert oasis filled the veranda beyond Aislynn’s apartments in the Underground. Chayse paused just outside the sliding glass doors and inhaled the scents. Grass, water, flowering plants, and serenity filled his nose, creating a balm against his concerns. His shoulders loosened and he exhaled.
Master Kindle said I need more of what I’d been getting. Still, standing here in Aislynn’s world gave him the jitters.
“Can I help you, Detective?”
A small pool of light attracted his attention, as well as the large expanses of creamy coffee skin flashing as Aislynn moved. A gaping silk shirt offered superficial cover on her shoulders. The succubus pressed an open book over her chest and fixed him with curious eyes.
“What are you doing?” Somehow the sound managed to get past his dry throat.
“Reading. What are you doing?” Aislynn tipped her head, a small smile curling her lips as his gaze slid down to her neatly trimmed mound. His mouth watered. Goddess, I want her.
“It looks like you’re doing more than reading.
She laughed. “Actually, I’m NETing.”
Aislynn held up a steaming mug. “Naked Evening Tea. It’s a good way to unwind after the stresses of the day.” The book slid to the side, exposing her luscious breasts.
He damn near swallowed his tongue. “Got any more tea?”
Aislynn raised her eyebrows. “Is this the beginning of a courteous conversation between you and me, Detective?”
Chayse grimaced, but his gaze flicked shamelessly over her body, drinking in the long, luscious curves in the soft light. “I came to apologize for my earlier behavior.”
She tilted her head, her expression thoughtful, before gesturing to the lounge chair beside her. “Come, join me. There is a mug in the wet bar behind me and extra tea in the teapot.”
He retrieved a cup and sat facing her with his elbows on his knees. Sitting so close to the succubus made his fears scream in warning, but he forced himself to relax. The Morukai shaman said he’d True Mated her and her energy helped with his healing. And I have felt better since spending the afternoon in her upstairs office.
He looked up at last, trying not to drool over the full swells of her breasts as she folded the book she’d been reading closed and set it aside. Two bite marks, one on either side of her neck, marred the smooth skin. From what he’d been told, he’d made one of them.
“I understand from Felicia you finally got to look at the security videos in accordance to your warrant. Did you find what you needed?”
He nodded. “I did, actually. The suspect entered the Underground and exited in a time frame right around the murder. No one else came in or out in the bracket of time. I’m pretty sure we’ve got him.”
“I’m relieved to hear that.” Her smile remained cool and professional despite her state of relative undress. “So you won’t have to return to Eve’s again. I bet that’s a relief to you.”
NO! Chayse’s Brother wolf snarled in the back of his mind and his shoulders slumped.
“No, ma’am. It’s not.”
Her elegant eyebrows went up. “It’s not?”
“No, ma’am. But first let me say I’m very sorry for taking advantage of you and fucking you in your office.” It didn’t sound the way he’d hoped, nor did it convey his true contrition.
She nodded, her expression still polite. “Apology accepted. But do you really regret it? Your brother said we True Mated because you bit me. He said it only happens once in the lifetime of a werewolf. Can you truly regret that?”
“I don’t understand how I can True Mate you. You’re not even my species.” He shook his head. “I don’t regret the Mating, and my Morukai healer says it was good for me despite….my hang-ups. But I do regret how it happened and how I ran after. I’ve been taught you never leave your Mate to be cared for by others. And I left you.” He tightened his hand into a fist around his mug and fought back the disgust at himself.
Cool fingers grasped his chin and lifted his face as Aislynn met his gaze. “Neither of us understood what was happening at the time. I bear you no ill will.” She released him and sat back, her eyes narrowing. “But I won’t tolerate pity or moping. If you’d like to indulge, please take your time elsewhere.”
Chayse blinked. Where had the polite succubus gone? This sounded more like a werewolf alpha female. Despite her nakedness, Aislynn wore her authority like a coat of armor, impenetrable and durable.
“Are you saying I should just get over it and let it go?”
“Is that so difficult? You made a mistake and you’re sorry for it. Regret only hampers the joy of the present. The past cannot be changed, only learned from.” She picked up her mug and sipped her tea. “So you can wallow if you choose, but not here.”
Anger surged. Where did this bitch get off? He’d come to apologize and she told him to move on. “Go to hell.”
“I’ll see you there, darling.”
