Mark says: Karma gets served. :)
Mark says: Read it twice. First time my brain cells were, “What?” Second time my head ached from laughter.

Mark says: Karma indeed.
Charlie pushed past the butler and into the hall. The soft glow of late afternoon sun shimmered through the mansion’s many windows, collecting like an angelic shroud around Rachel’s form as she suddenly appeared. “Carson, who’s that at the door?”
The moment stretched. She was still Rachel: tall, fair, and perfect. It was her eyes that had changed. She’d seen too much, been wounded too deeply.
Her voice betrayed no sense of surprise, despite her rigid posture. “What are you doing here?”
Charlie fidgeted with his fingers at his sides but didn’t lower his gaze. He couldn’t appear weak. He had to show her survival was an option. “I needed to be certain you were happy, safe.”
Rachel’s jaw visibly clenched. Her pouty lips pursed and she shifted her weight. “I’d like you to leave, please.”
She spit in almost a whisper, taking steps to push him out the door the butler stood before, still open. “You have no right!”
Charlie grabbed her face between his hands. Tears were cresting in her eyes, one cascading down upon his palm. “We are stronger than this, darling.”
“No.” She stepped away and turned her back. “Go.”
The door fell with finality, the hollow tone of wood and metal ricocheting through him. How did he expect to repair what he had broken?
