Deelylah says: Baby kitty and rich description.
My buttery leather investment in confidence-boosting footwear fared no better.
“Brilliant. There goes a month of savings.”
My left ear twitched at a tiny cry just ahead. I squinted through the gloom. Claws scraping the concrete curb, an itty bitty kitten struggled against the runoff on the street.
“Oh, crap.” I hustled across the thankfully empty road. “Hang on, baby.”
The little ball of bedraggled fluff let go just as I scooped him—or her—up. Squeaky cries of distress subsided as I stopped under a broad green awning. Gray blue eyes blinked up at me. The kitten squirmed.
“There, there.” I gently scratched a cheek. “I think we can both agree it’s pretty rough out there, huh?” I pointed to—well, everything. “All those alley squirrels and pigeons. Cats too, if you’re any indication. You’re better off here with me, don’t you think?”
The kitten leaned into my hand, a rumbling purr beginning in its chest. Opening my coat, I tucked it inside. The kitten turned around in a circle, settling in a coil on the convenient shelf of my boobs.
“Snug as a bug.” I zipped back up. “I always knew the girls would come in handy for something one day.”
