Olivia says: Good hook, I want to know, is she dead?

Olivia says: A distinct voice and I felt like was reading the start of a Stephen King type novel.
Some people ought never to be bosses. They’re people who can’t look you in the eye. You get the feeling that if they did, they would worry that you might see into their soul.
Mr. Wardell was like that. His first name was Howard but he wasn’t someone you’d call Howie, not to his face, anyways.
I was sixteen. He was my first boss. It was Iris, his wife, who hired me to wait tables, wash dishes, take out trash on Friday nights and all-day Saturday. She ran the cash. Mr. Wardell did the cooking. Never left the kitchen. Orders were stuck on a clothes peg. The pegs whirled on a wheel. Numbered. Very scientific.
Basic Rule: Don’t talk to Mr. Wardell.
And he never talked.
Another Basic Rule: Iris was clear that HE was the boss. Any employer-employee discussions…his domain.
Problem was, he never talked.
I mentioned that, right!
Those days, kids took what the employer offered. When I started, Iris offered eighty cents an hour. “That’s what Mr. Wardell thinks a new employee is worth,” Iris told me.
It was my first job. I didn’t know what I was worth.
After six months, I asked Iris for a raise.
“Not my area,” she said.
“Write a note!”
So, I did.
I bugged Iris for a month.
“That man, she said. We’ll have to see about that.”
She ripped into him, royally.
I went up to a buck an hour.
Next month, I up and quit.
