Nikki says: I definitely wanted to read more. What a great story. Please tell me there’s more? I loved how the prompt was split up in the story. The words and imagery flowed smoothly.
The wind lapped at her calves, whipping her long, white skirt in a whirl. She’d given up trying to hold it down. The howling through the trees sounded like a woman wailing, a distinct keening that came along with mourning.
Shivers wracked her body, and Dom hunched her shoulders, creating a smaller surface for the chill to attack. Didn’t he hear that?
Without looking directly at her, Jackson shifted closer, sliding his arm around her and drawing her into his warmth. “Cold?”
Her teeth chattered a response, before she replied, “You could say that.”
“Let’s go back to the main house. There are no answers out here.”
“But I have faith.”
“In us?” he asked.
The moment stretched, and she weighed the available responses. Did he mean us, as in her and him? Or the team?
He turned toward her, and his gray-blue eyes grew colder than the winter air. Dom wanted to back down, to look away, but knew if she didn’t hold her ground now she’d never win the war between them.
“There is no us.” She forced conviction she didn’t have into her voice, until his gaze shifted once again to the flowing waters.
“We’ll have to see about that.”
