Julie says: I love mysteries, and the set up of someone with a recognizable MO dealing with fires, but hasn't killed anyone with it, but is being framed. Color me interested.

Julie says: Any time an author can wrap any Eastern religion (Buddhism in this case) into a paranormal setting and make it make total sense... yeah, I'm all over that.

Julie says: The cold words used at the beginning and the ending, juxtaposed with a phone call from hot Mexico makes me want to find a blanket. I'm intrigued how anyone comes from the hood, and is a cannibal... and why a person with Any kind of floppy parts of a brain would go with someone of that background... As a self-proclaimed loather of worn out tropes and hater of weak characters--the main character hanging up despite the pain shows strength, and a setting up of some fabulous characters. Did I mention, I love the sarcasm of "being" Canadian by listing the only things Americans probably know about the country?
That night, winter set in with a vengeance. Late November is always beastly. I went to bed early after my chinwag with Lou. I knew I had a Canadian soul. I loved moose and whatever the hell else they had there.
I was slammed out of my beauty sleep by a midnight call.
“Oli. Is it really you?” Holly sounded like a night nurse in a madhouse.
“Where are you?” I asked, and then said, “No, don’t tell me…”
But she told me.
“No. Yelapa. South of Puerto Vallarta. Oh Oli, I made such a mistake…”
“That’s what life is all about, Holly. Figuring that out.”
I was coming across as a cold, spurned lover. Winter storms and being dumped had that effect on me.
“Oli, Buddy is crazy…”
“What’s your point?” I said. “He was always nuts. That’s what comes from being a hood AND a cannibal. People are always trying to kill you and all you want to do is eat a little human flesh.”
I could feel myself getting stronger, distancing my heart from hers, not getting drawn in to her tragic, desperate drama.
She started to whimper. “Come and get me, Oli. I feel like I’ll die here.”
I was not going to bend. For a time, we had soared together. Ultimately, Holly had hitched her wagon to Buddy’s sinking star.
“You’re on your own, kid. You’ll make out fine.”
I hung up.
The wind howled fiercely.
