Jeff says: Great flow, great feel, great prose.
Cate Derham | @Cate_Derham
Jeff says: Lots of potential in this piece. I can imagine it expanded out to a longer work.
Cari Oleskewicz | @Carilynn72
Jeff says: Very effective piece, especially the ending. Harsh.
Josh Peters | @joshbgosh
Jeff says: I'm a sucker for a classic fairy tale and this short piece has that kind of feel to it. The dialogue is just right & the prose gets it done with simple elegance. Very nice.
"Nah, you don't want none of that stuff."
Daniel looked up to the source of the voice to see a small monkey hanging by its tail ten feet above his head.
"What do you mean I don't want none of that?"
The monkey cocked its head to one side and stared into Daniel's eyes.
"The best fruit always grows up top."
With that the small creature scampered up the tree and Daniel followed. At first he had trouble keeping up but after a minute he felt as free as the little beast, swinging his body from one branch to another. He reached the top of the tree and found the mischievous monkey hanging upside down by his from the tallest branch, waiting for him. On either side of the monkey hung two perfect golden fruits. Daniel reached for the fruit and the monkey slapped his hand.
"If you take those you never go back down."
Daniel looked down to the old tree house, his unfinished projects scattered across the broken boards. He made his decision.
"Then I shall take them."
