Tom says: Now I'm wondering did they get out or not?
Cara Michaels | @caramichaels
Tom says: I particularly liked her use of the prompt as well as what the story left me wondering.
“I know you know all about this place.”
“I’d like to get out of here.”
“It’s a reasonably free purgatory, kid. Don’t let me stop you.” I didn’t look up from the ancient text on animism, documenting--
“Will someone else?”
“Hm?” I pressed a finger to the page, marking my spot. Zeke hovered just inside the door of my office. “Will someone else, what?”
“They don’t need to.” Poor kid looked totally lost. “Listen, you’re a new arrival. You have limited access.”
“If you want a proper tour, you’re going to have to wait. Otherwise, I have some brochures from the information desk, which you would have gotten if you’d been brought to a processor instead of an archivist. Anyway, there’s a map and some “so you’re recently dead” type of information.”
“No, please. Miss—um—” He bit down hard on his lip.
“Spit it out, Zeke.”
“I want to get out of Hell.” He flinched, squeezing his eyes shut.
“Cute.” If I only got a day’s reduction in my sentence here for every time I heard that. “I have a deadline, kid.”
“I’m not a kid.”
“I’ve been here over four thousand years. Everyone is a kid.” I knew the days and hours, too, but that might scare him. I absorbed his glassy stare and pale cheeks. Okay, scare him more.
“Please help me.”
Hellfire and damnation.
“You just had to say please, didn’t you?”
Congratulations FOURTEEN TIME WINNER Cara, Lizzie, Anna, and Cate! Don't forget to claim your badges and display them with pride. You certainly earned it!
