Veronica says: I was drawn right into the scene by the details, and wanted to know more. I would have kept reading happily, if this had been part of a long story.
Kelly Heinen | @Aightball
Veronica says: The story had some really unusual twists and turns to it, and seemed there was a lot of fascinating backstory. I could see this as part of an intriguing novel.
Deelylah Mullin | @VampBard
Veronica says: Because the banter between all the characters sounded so natural and easy, in addition to the use of cooking details. The people seemed very ‘real’ and in the moment together, like a scene from a movie. She incorporated a lot of stage business into the story very skillfully, with the hot pepper and the food preparation. Well done!
Kate turned her head toward Mara’s. “Keep the seeds or no?”
“Depends how hot you want the chili.”
Kate longed to taste Mara’s full, rosy lips.
“I’d break it off, or you’ll both be sorry.” Chester walked into the kitchen, a know-it-all-with-piss-poor-timing.
Kate shuddered out a breath, attention returning to the cutting board. “Why would we regret it?”
Mara stepped back; Kate shivered.
“Habanero peppers are 100,000 to 350,000 on the Scoville scale. Seeds and white membrane put it on the hotter end.” Chester pointed at the orange halves. “You’ll only want to put one of those in your chili.”
“Everyone would hate us if dinner was too hot to eat without a pound of cheese,” Mara added.
“Best not to annoy the masses.” Kate removed the offending tissue before she diced the habanero.
Kate said to Chester, “Dinner will be ready in a couple hours. I’m sure you can find something to do--”
Mara wrapped her arm around Kate. “I know what we can do.”
Chester sighed. “I’ll never understand this lesbian thing,” he grumbled, leaving the kitchen.
“Personally, I’m a huge fan of this ‘lesbian thing’.” Kate turned and whispered, “It means I get to do uninhibited things with you.”
