I'm offering snippets of IN DEATH'S SHADOW, Book 3 in the Rifts series. Quinn and Maia have entered the Windbreak Keep and Maia needs help drawing a bath. Quinn is caught woolgathering.
Damn, it’s been too long since I’ve had a woman. His usually ordered thoughts splintered as the vision of Maia in nothing but her long hair overwhelmed him and his cock flexed in appreciation. He mentally slapped himself and set about taking off his coat and weapons. Sleeping in caves necessitated the hard company of his weapons, but in this place he could get away with only a single knife. Hell, he didn’t even need a knife. He could kill someone with anything, including a teacup.
He froze and rotated, both dreading and anticipating what he’d see when he turned. Maia’s elegant form clothed only in a thin linen shirt and her trousers sent his blood decidedly south. Her dusky nipples pressed against the mildly translucent fabric and his mouth watered with the thought of sucking on them.
“Can you ask Moriah to have a bath drawn for me?”
He blinked. “Why me?”
She gave him a goofy smile. “Because you’re still dressed and I’m not.”
Oh, he knew she wasn’t. He could see it and it gave him all sorts of thoughts he usually ignored. Worse, if he went to look for Moriah, he’d telegraph those thoughts pretty clearly.
“Yes, of course.” Wait, what had he said? He blinked as Maia smiled.
“Thank you.” She turned and retreated back into her bedroom, freeing his mind from her spell.
What the hell is wrong with me? He seemed to be asking the question a lot lately, but he dutifully headed for the door to summon the Chamberlain. He grasped the door pull and paused. How exactly was he going to do that? Shout down the hallway?
That puts a damper on things. ;) There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list and in the Snippet Sunday Facebook group. A few of my favorites are Karen Michelle Nutt, Veronica Scott, Gem Sivad, Jessica Subject, and Iris Blobel. Here's the blurb to THE IN DEATH'S SHADOW:
After three hundred years, Princess Maia is done with dryads.
Imprisoned by the wood folk for a crime she didn’t commit, Princess Maiasora Silvercloak wants her life back. If she finds the Key to the Twelve Realms and returns it to the dryads by the summer solstice, she’s free. Too bad she has no clue where to look. And the dryads’ solution might kill her.
Master Assassin Quinn Tarlen wants safe passage across the dryads’ forest after his last contract put him in the crossfire. The dryads offer him a deal: Escort a princess on her quest to find a magical artifact and he’ll be released. One catch: she’s the daughter of the king who killed his brother.
Spell-bound together, they must scour the world for the pieces of this artifact without getting killed or killing each other. Falling in love isn’t part of the plan as they race against time to secure the Key before the deadline. But nothing’s ever simple when magic is involved and death isn’t the worst outcome if they fail to find the Key.
