In this snippet, Jaime Hensen is talking to Kevin "Rimshot" Stanton and asking him why the squad got the name 'Beta'. Jaime is the first to speak.
“So why “beta” squad?”
“What?” Kevin’s brow lowered in confusion.
“Sorry, non-sequitur. Chris always calls your squad ‘beta’, but I’m pretty sure the military designation of B is ‘bravo.’ Where did the title beta come from?”
He laughed. “Chris never told you?” When she shook her head, he nodded. “When Chris got injured and was doped up on morphine, she said we “did it mo’betta” than all the other squads on the team, and Deli, Petty Officer Rubenovich, pipes up with Beta Squad, and it stuck. So Bravo Squad became Beta Squad, at least to the members.”
“Ah, I see. It’s an inside joke.”
“Yeah, kinda. Though we’re not much of a joke to our opponents on missions.” His grim smile made her shiver. “The word beta is a designation, not a representation of our skills.”
“I don’t doubt it.” Words had meaning, but in the SEALs’ world, actions spoke far more eloquently to their abilities.
Sometimes you need a little inside joke. ;) There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list and in the Snippet Sunday Facebook group. A few of my favorites are Charley Descoteaux, Jeff Tsuruoka, Gem Sivad, Goran Zidar, Veronica Scott, and Sarah Wesson. Here's the blurb for Rimshot's Hard Target:
Navy SEAL sniper Kevin “Rimshot” Stanton has had one thing on his mind for months: Find his sister. When a retired teammate suggests calling a private investigator specializing in missing persons, he takes a chance on the woman he’s lusted after since a friend’s wedding. He hopes she won’t mind mixing business with pleasure, because he wants more than just her professional expertise.
Jaime Hensen isn’t the kind of woman to settle down. She likes the wham-whir-thank-you-sir lifestyle. But the night she spends with Rimshot makes her want more. Too bad he’s a glacier outside the bedroom. She throws all her concentration into the job to ignore the hurt.
When Jaime’s investigation gets too close to a mysterious company hiring only women, she’s kidnapped and Rimshot suspects they’ve taken his sister as well. He’ll need every skill in his arsenal to save them.
Rimshot has one shot to get love right, and he’s not about to miss.
