I'm offering snippets of IN DEATH'S SHADOW, Book 3 in the Rifts series. Master Assassin Quinn Tarlen is trying to open up to his companion, Princess Maia. But but he's still a bit rusty.
“Forgive me, princess. I’m not used to traveling with others, and I find conversation often superfluous.” He raised his gaze to hers. “And I’m sorry for being an ass last night. I had no cause to blame you for the death of your sister.”
Maia raised her eyebrows. “Glory, did you just give me a full sentence and use a big word?” She placed a theatrical hand on her chest. “I’m stunned.”
To his surprise, humor bubbled up rather than irritation. “What were you expecting? That I have no cordiality? I assure you, princess, while I may not be able to rival your loquaciousness, I’m fully capable of holding a complete discourse should the mood strike me.”
A brilliant grin broke across her face and she laughed, the sound splashing off the walls of the cave. For the first time since the death of his brother, Quinn’s heart lifted and he grinned back at her.
“You have unexpected depths.” Maia wrapped her coat tighter around her shoulders and shook her head. “Will wonders never cease.” Then she lost her lovely smile. “At least you spoke a little. Any conversation is worth hearing after spending centuries as a lamp.”
“It’s not too different from being an assassin, actually,” Quinn mused as he rose to join her closer to the fire. “The only people we encounter are usually our targets, and there’s no point speaking to them.”
That puts it in perspective. ;) There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list and in the Snippet Sunday Facebook group. A few of my favorites are Karen Michelle Nutt, Veronica Scott, Gem Sivad, Jessica Subject, and Iris Blobel. Here's the blurb to THE IN DEATH'S SHADOW:
After three hundred years, Princess Maia is done with dryads.
Imprisoned by the wood folk for a crime she didn’t commit, Princess Maiasora Silvercloak wants her life back. If she finds the Key to the Twelve Realms and returns it to the dryads by the summer solstice, she’s free. Too bad she has no clue where to look. And the dryads’ solution might kill her.
Master Assassin Quinn Tarlen wants safe passage across the dryads’ forest after his last contract put him in the crossfire. The dryads offer him a deal: Escort a princess on her quest to find a magical artifact and he’ll be released. One catch: she’s the daughter of the king who killed his brother.
Spell-bound together, they must scour the world for the pieces of this artifact without getting killed or killing each other. Falling in love isn’t part of the plan as they race against time to secure the Key before the deadline. But nothing’s ever simple when magic is involved and death isn’t the worst outcome if they fail to find the Key.
