DELI'S TAKE OUT, Bad Boys of Beta Squad, Book 4 is available now, but even better, it's available in PAPER too. It has direct ties to Rimshot's Hard Target and Darwin's Evolution.
In this snippet, we start in Deli's POV, and Bravo Squad has made it back to the ship with their wounded. Deli's friend Bones took a lot of damage and he's concerned. The guy he's talking to is Farkas (pronounced "Far-kash") with the nickname Padfoot because of his love of Harry Potter.
Come on, Bones. You gotta pull through.
Deli didn’t often entertain fatalistic thoughts, but Bones’ stillness when they headed home ate at him. No one should be that still unless they were dead. And he’d seen the man breathing.
“Fuck!” He slammed his fist into the locker door.
“Something eating at you, Deli?” Farkas leaned appeared beside him, his arms crossed over his chest. “Or did the locker insult your manhood?”
Deli met the other man’s eyes and scowled. “Nothin’. I’m fine.”
“Oh sure. I’ve seen that kind of fine. Fucked up, Insecure, Neurotic, and Emotional.” Farkas nodded. “Or maybe you’re just F’NE, ’cause I don’t think you’re insecure about anything.”
Deli wanted to pummel the smirk off Padfoot’s face, but he couldn’t argue with his assessment. He was emotional, but he usually kept it bottled up and diffused it with furious exercise or hardcore sex. Neither of which looked to be on his radar any time soon. He growled and shook his head.
“Listen, I know you don’t need me butting into anything you got going on, but maybe now would be a good time to ask for leave.”
“What the fuck are you talkin’ about? Why the hell would you say that, Farkas?”
“Because you’ve gone through a shit-ton of teammates recently what with Brickman and Killian getting medically discharged from fighting status, and Anderson retiring. It’s hard to switch gears so often.” Farkas shrugged. “You’ve never let up and given yourself a break.”
“I’m a goddamned SEAL. That’s what we do.”
“Yeah, I know, I went through BUD/S too, remember? Got the Budweiser.” Farkas tilted his head, his expression serious. “But we all need some real down time. Don’t try to tell yourself different. And you can always carry around your electronic leash if you’re needed. Go ask for some leave before you’re useless to the rest of us.”
Sometimes the hard truth is still the best. ;) There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list, the Snippet Sunday Facebook group, and the Rainbow Snippets Facebook group. A few of my favorites are, P.T. Wyant, Karen Michelle Nutt, Veronica Scott, Jessica Subject, Kathy Griffith Karysa Faire, and Iris Blobel.
Here's the blurb for DELI'S TAKE OUT:
CPO Eugene “Deli” Rubenovich has hit his limit. After his friend is gravely injured on a mission, Deli takes leave to clear his head. He wants the great outdoors, fresh air, hiking, and maybe a beer or two. What he gets is a 5-on-1 bar fight and cartel thugs trying to forcibly take a woman’s home. And then there’s the bear.
Caroline Atherton has a quiet life she loves as the owner of Last Chance Dog Sanctuary, where she rehabilitates dogs like Sergeant Trace to return to civilian life. When a simple shopping trip goes awry, a handsome Navy Chief winds up nursing a concussion after defending her from a pack of idiot males.
Deli’s not used to being rescued, but the beautiful woman who heals dogs makes it an experience worth repeating. She’s says she’s got no room in her life for pushy men, but the cartel gets nasty, and Caroline needs help defending her home and her dogs.
Enlisting assistance from the Ultimate Recon crew to take out the enemy is just another day for Deli, but to win Caroline’s heart? He’ll need every skill in his arsenal for that mission.
So much for taking a vacation.
