In this snippet, Estelle Three-Hearts has come to talk to her uncle about her calendar, and he insists she stay until the morning so the drive back to Three Lakes isn't as dangerous. Uncle Jeff (Captain Knight) speaks first.
“Here you are. There are fresh towels and other linens in the bureau there.” He pointed at an old, beat up chest of drawers. “There’s a desk and a charging station there so you can hook up a computer or phone. The Wi-Fi password is Sparks85.”
“For the dog?” She grinned as she shrugged out of her coat.
“Yeah, it’s in reference to the eighty-five hotdogs he ate at one family picnic. I’d never seen that damn dog poop so much in my life.”
“Eww. Thanks for that visual.”
“You’re welcome. I’m here to help.” Jeff grinned. “I’m hoping tonight will be pretty quiet, but people do stupid things when it snows, so the alarm might go off. I apologize in advance. It’ll scare you out of bed. Which is the point with firefighters.”
“And you thought I’d be safer here than driving home to a quiet apartment?” She snorted. “I think you’re selling me short.”
“Hey, at least I warned you. Last year, one of the guys had family stuck at the station and he didn’t bother to mention the bell.” Jeff grimaced. “Shaved damn near five years off his wife’s life, and the kids wouldn’t quiet down for hours.”
“Any loud noises you hear will be my heart galloping for the woods.” She waved him out. “It sounds like I better get some sleep when the getting is good. Thanks for the place to stay, Uncle Jeff. I’ll try not to soil the sheets when the alarm goes off.”
He laughed. “You do that."
Let's just hope the bell doesn't go off. ;) There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list, the Snippet Sunday Facebook group, and the Rainbow Snippets Facebook group. A few of my favorites are, P.T. Wyant, Karen Michelle Nutt, Veronica Scott, Jessica Subject, J.D. Walker, Addison Albright, and Iris Blobel.
Here's the blurb to BURNING YULETIDE:
Estelle Three-Hearts has one goal for the holidays – finish her charity calendar for the ‘Smoke Detectors in Every Building’ program to provide fire safety for the citizens of Three Lakes. Luckily, her uncle is a captain for the fire department who’s recruited volunteers to pose for the sexy firefighter calendar. There’s nothing more fun to look at than half-naked firefighters all year round.
Mark Redfeather, a Firebird shifter, has learned to use his birthright for firefighting rather than fire-lighting. When his captain asked for volunteers for the charity calendar, he had no plans to participate – until he meets Estelle, and recognizes her as his mate.
Estelle is human and knows nothing about the Elder Races, but when an arsonist strikes her home and studio, Mark is forced to reveal his secret. Estelle must decide if he’s the monster she fears or the man who sets her heart on fire.
