You might have noticed that KindleWorlds by Amazon has shut down and the authors have received the rights back to their books. Everyone is doing something different with the books and I chose to edit a bit and re-release. DARWIN'S EVOLUTION is now available wide (rather than just on Amazon US). This is not a new story so much as a changing the publisher and the cover. If you've already read it, drop by and leave a review. If not, grab a copy of my spin-off from the Bad Boys of Beta Squad series.
In this snippet, we start in Sadie Hawkins, Marine Master Sergeant Ret.'s POV now that she's arrived in Williams to be with her mother. Her mom Clarice is the first one to speak.
“I’m good. Better now that you’re here. How was the trip across from Cali?”
“Good.” She stepped up on the porch to hug her mother. “Quiet. Thoughtful.”
Clarice raised a silver eyebrow. “Thoughtful, eh? What kinds of thoughts?”
“Oh, you know.” She pushed an errant silver strand of hair behind her mother’s ear. “Where I’m going. What I’ll be doing now. That sort of thing.” She shrugged, trying to downplay some of her anxiety over the new world she faced. “I’ve been a marine my whole adult life. I’m not used to having wide-open possibilities. It’s a little daunting.”
Clarice didn’t scoff or roll her eyes. Instead, she nodded slowly. “I know what that’s like, sweetheart. I faced that every day after your dad died. It’s not easy and it might scare the living hell outta you, but sometimes the best way to face the fear is to just get on with things.”
“Thanks, Mom. You’ve been a damn good role-model for me.” Sadie gave her mom a tight smile. “So you wanna tell me why you came out to greet me with the shotgun?”
Clarice snorted. “Noticed that, did you? You always did see more than I might want to share. It was hell at Christmastime.” She nodded to Sadie’s car. “Why don’t you grab your gear and bring it in. We can have some lunch and talk about it. There’s no reason not to be settled a little before we address anything untoward.”
“Untoward?” Sadie frowned. She hadn’t heard her mother use that word in a long time.
“Grab your gear, Sadie. I’ll put the kettle on.”
Oh dear, sounds like there's a lot more going on than just a reunion. ;) There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list, the Snippet Sunday Facebook group, and the Rainbow Snippets Facebook group. A few of my favorites are, P.T. Wyant, Karen Michelle Nutt, Veronica Scott, Jessica Subject, Kathy Griffith Karysa Faire, and Iris Blobel.
Here's the blurb for DARWIN'S EVOLUTION:
Sometimes retirement is a helluva lot of work…
Retired Marine Master Sergeant Sadie Hawkins is ready for a quiet life with her mother in northern Arizona. No more recon, no more shots fired. Hell, she might even give romance a try if she finds the right guy. Like the one asleep on her shoulder on the train.
Cyrus “Darwin” Finch retired from the Navy SEALs and now runs his own security, surveillance, and rescue company employing retired members of the four branches of the U.S. military. He’s on “forced” vacation and is supposed to be relaxing, dammit. Until he meets Sadie.
When they discover a foreign enemy setting up a domestic retreat in Sadie’s backyard, romance and vacations take a backseat. There are no calm seas or clear skies with bullets flying, and no time for a Happy Ever After. But SEALs never give up and marines never surrender.
