In this snippet, Estelle Three-Hearts and her assistant Amy are finishing up their first photo shoot, and thanking Mark Redfeather for volunteering. He initially didn't want to take his shirt off in front of a large audience, but his ego got tweaked by his fellow firefighters, and Estelle's interest helped him relax.
“For me, too, Ms. Three-Hearts.” Mark's smile warmed her more than it should. “You made it so easy and relaxed. I was worried I’d be too stressed to do it, but you made it fun.”
“What made you decide to take your shirt off?”
He frowned. “You didn’t like it?”
“On the contrary. I liked it a lot.” She leaned closer and lowered her voice. “You would’ve looked good anyway, but I think you’re very sexy in your helmet and pants.”
He stilled and she raised her gaze to his, trying not to inhale the scent of him. He smelled of Mesquite wood and clean sweat, and she wanted to spend her days snuggled up to him. Her thoughts made her pull back and take a deep breath to calm her heart.
“Sexy, you say?”
“Yes, sir.” She smiled even as the heat flared in her cheeks. “I’ll definitely include you in the calendar. Maybe for my birthday month.”
He raised his eyebrows. “So, your birthday is coming up?”
“Yup. She’s a New Year’s baby.” Amy winked as she walked by.
“Really? A New Year’s baby? That’s lucky.”
“She even got a story in the paper that year. She was the first one born at the stroke of twelve.” Amy grinned. “You should show him the article. First baby born at the start of the new decade. It was a big deal.”
“It’s not a big deal anymore. We had a new millennium since my birth. I’m pretty sure that baby got far more attention than I ever did.”
Gotta love the fifteen minutes of fame. ;) There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list, the Snippet Sunday Facebook group, and the Rainbow Snippets Facebook group. A few of my favorites are, P.T. Wyant, Karen Michelle Nutt, Veronica Scott, Jessica Subject, J.D. Walker, Addison Albright, and Iris Blobel.
Here's the blurb to BURNING YULETIDE:
Estelle Three-Hearts has one goal for the holidays – finish her charity calendar for the ‘Smoke Detectors in Every Building’ program to provide fire safety for the citizens of Three Lakes. Luckily, her uncle is a captain for the fire department who’s recruited volunteers to pose for the sexy firefighter calendar. There’s nothing more fun to look at than half-naked firefighters all year round.
Mark Redfeather, a Firebird shifter, has learned to use his birthright for firefighting rather than fire-lighting. When his captain asked for volunteers for the charity calendar, he had no plans to participate – until he meets Estelle, and recognizes her as his mate.
Estelle is human and knows nothing about the Elder Races, but when an arsonist strikes her home and studio, Mark is forced to reveal his secret. Estelle must decide if he’s the monster she fears or the man who sets her heart on fire.
