In this snippet, Jaime Hensen is talking to Kevin "Rimshot" Stanton about how she knew he was a Navy SEAL sniper. It's their second meal together, but their first official date. Rimshot is the first to speak.
“You seem to know a lot about Navy SEALs.”
“I’ve been with a few.”
She smiled, but her gut clenched. A lot of men couldn’t handle a woman who made up her own mind about sex and enjoyed it. Many still held onto the outdated belief that men could screw anything, but women had to be pure as the driven snow, an irony considering the men had to screw someone. I hope he’s not turned off because I have a lot of sexual experience. She’d always been careful for her own health, using both birth control and condoms for her sexual liaisons, but she’d been labeled a slut more than once.
“To be fair, I’ve hooked up with Marines, too.”
Kevin laughed. “Well, at least you didn’t go for the Army.”
She grinned. “Not intense enough for me.” She pushed her door open, suddenly needing the free air to dispel some of the same intensity she’d mentioned.
He exited his truck and locked it before meeting her at the tailgate. “Why Navy SEALs, specifically, though? I’d think we’d be tough to date. We’re always gone and we can’t talk about where we go or what we do. I’ve heard a lot of women hate that about us.”
Jaime considered as she took his offered arm. God, I love that old fashioned charm. “I think what I like most about the SEALs is their willingness to connect intimately for just a short time, a moment of release and relief for them, and for me.” She shrugged. “Call it an affirmation of life after those rough, intense times, but the intensity you all carry is heady and exciting, and the sex is unbelievable.”
Jaime never minces words. ;) There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list and in the Snippet Sunday Facebook group. A few of my favorites are Charley Descoteaux, Jeff Tsuruoka, Gem Sivad, Goran Zidar, Veronica Scott, and Sarah Wesson. Here's the blurb for Rimshot's Hard Target:
Navy SEAL sniper Kevin “Rimshot” Stanton has had one thing on his mind for months: Find his sister. When a retired teammate suggests calling a private investigator specializing in missing persons, he takes a chance on the woman he’s lusted after since a friend’s wedding. He hopes she won’t mind mixing business with pleasure, because he wants more than just her professional expertise.
Jaime Hensen isn’t the kind of woman to settle down. She likes the wham-whir-thank-you-sir lifestyle. But the night she spends with Rimshot makes her want more. Too bad he’s a glacier outside the bedroom. She throws all her concentration into the job to ignore the hurt.
When Jaime’s investigation gets too close to a mysterious company hiring only women, she’s kidnapped and Rimshot suspects they’ve taken his sister as well. He’ll need every skill in his arsenal to save them.
Rimshot has one shot to get love right, and he’s not about to miss.
