In this snippet, Drake MacGregor is the local archivist and a vampire who hasn't fed in too long (a couple of days). He's toppled off a ladder and broken his leg, but he's too weak to heal. Dr. Aliandra Cantora is on call for the evening and is the reason for Drake's distraction, but she's left the room to get a wheelchair. Drake is really hungry, in pain, and his sweet assistant is there trying to comfort him.
Bailey frowned. “What were you doing to fall so badly? You should’ve asked for help. I was just reading.”
He wanted to smile at her attempt to hide her worry by scolding, but her warm, coppery blood scent called to him and he had a hard time reining in his hunger. He leaned toward her before he could stop himself, and she threw herself into his arms, hugging him tightly.
“I’m so sorry this happened to you. I wish I could make it better.”
Oh, you can, my dear. Just let me sip from your fountain of life and you’ll help me…
Drake caught himself before he’d done more than nuzzle her throat. His lips rested against the pulsing vein under her skin. All he had to do was open his mouth and take just a little.
No, no, I can’t. It wouldn’t be right. But an insidious thought reminded him it would save him from feasting on Dr. Cantora when she took him to the clinic tonight and his resolve wavered as his arms closed around Bailey’s back.
Never tempt a hungry vampire. ;) There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list and in the Snippet Sunday Facebook group. A few of my favorites are Charley Descoteaux, Jeff Tsuruoka, Gem Sivad, Goran Zidar, Veronica Scott, and Sarah Wesson. No cover yet, but here's the blurb for Order of the Dragon:
Drake MacGregor always adhered to the adage ‘let sleeping dragons lie’, until he slept with one.
In an effort to make up for his past as Vlad the Impaler, Drake has been living a small, quiet life in Three Lakes. As the town’s archivist, his knowledge of history and his place in it weigh on him. Drake has one desire—to rectify the atrocities committed in the name of his knightly order. Too bad he can’t keep his hands, or his fangs, off the local doctor, especially when he discovers she’s an actual dragon.
Aliandra Cantora del Viento is old enough and wise enough to ignore her attraction to the handsome historian, especially when her heart suggests he might be something more than he appears. Drake stokes her fires and curls her tail, and after a hot night in her clinic, the game is on. But he avoids her and nothing she tries breaks through his reserve, despite his obvious interest. He turns her on then apologizes for it, repeatedly. Not exactly the kind of relationship she’d hoped for yet she can’t walk away.
When a mysterious researcher arrives with his son, Drake becomes more edgy and irritable, and Aliandra must decide if she’s willing to fight for him. Especially when he might be her True Mate.
