You might have noticed that KindleWorlds by Amazon has shut down and the authors have received the rights back to their books. Everyone is doing something different with the books and I chose to edit a bit and re-release. DARWIN'S EVOLUTION is now available wide (rather than just on Amazon US). This is not a new story so much as a changing the publisher and the cover. If you've already read it, drop by and leave a review. If not, grab a copy of my spin-off from the Bad Boys of Beta Squad series.
In this snippet, we start in Cyrus "Darwin" Finch's POV now that he's in Flagstaff getting some coffee and thinking about Sadie.
He ordered an iced mocha just as his phone rang and his heart jumped in his chest. Had Sadie called him already? He yanked the phone out of his pocket and read the little screen. Mild disappointment filtered through the excitement as he lifted the phone to his ear.
“Hey Darwin, I thought you were on vacation.”
“I’m trying to be, simple twit. Why are you calling me?”
“Someone has to keep you on target. That’s the thing with you Navy guys, always taking last minute detours. Thank God you have marines to keep you in line.” The lilting sound of a Georgia accent filled the phone and Cyrus couldn’t help but grin.
“Seriously, Maddy, why are you calling me?” He nodded to the barista who handed him his iced coffee and headed out the door so he wouldn’t disturb the other patrons. “Has something gone wrong? Do you need me to come in?”
“Rein in those horses, there, Darwin. Everything here is fine, I was just callin’ to make sure you were actually takin’ time off rather than meetin’ with potential clients on the sly.”
“No, ma’am, I haven’t done that. But… I met a marine.”
There was a long pause on the other end of the phone. Madeline “Bulldog” Nixon had been a helluva drill sergeant before she retired from active service, but she also had a big romantic heart buried under her tough-as-nails exterior. Despite being only a few years older than Cyrus, she mothered everyone in the company when she could. At least in her own way.
“Oh, Lord, you ain’t hirin’ someone new, are you?”
“No, ma’am, I’m not. She wasn’t a business contact.”
No, but she might be more than that. ;) There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list, the Snippet Sunday Facebook group, and the Rainbow Snippets Facebook group. A few of my favorites are, P.T. Wyant, Karen Michelle Nutt, Veronica Scott, Jessica Subject, Kathy Griffith Karysa Faire, and Iris Blobel.
Here's the blurb for DARWIN'S EVOLUTION:
Sometimes retirement is a helluva lot of work…
Retired Marine Master Sergeant Sadie Hawkins is ready for a quiet life with her mother in northern Arizona. No more recon, no more shots fired. Hell, she might even give romance a try if she finds the right guy. Like the one asleep on her shoulder on the train.
Cyrus “Darwin” Finch retired from the Navy SEALs and now runs his own security, surveillance, and rescue company employing retired members of the four branches of the U.S. military. He’s on “forced” vacation and is supposed to be relaxing, dammit. Until he meets Sadie.
When they discover a foreign enemy setting up a domestic retreat in Sadie’s backyard, romance and vacations take a backseat. There are no calm seas or clear skies with bullets flying, and no time for a Happy Ever After. But SEALs never give up and marines never surrender.
