In this snippet, Estelle Three-Hearts has come to talk to her uncle about her calendar, and you get a little backstory as to why. Uncle Jeff (Captain Knight) speaks first.
“So, what did you need to talk about?”
“I need to know the schedules of the men who agreed to come for the photoshoots, find out which have animal aversions or allergies, and what day is good to get the whole crew together to take a group shot. I want to bring as much money in for the Smoke Detector in Every Building program as I can.”
Jeff lost his smile as he nodded. “I know this means a lot to you, Flash. How is your brother doing?”
She shrugged, though her heart clenched. “Emery is a little better. His last surgery was in September, but the skin grafts are still really painful.”
“Has he been using the lavender essential oil cream I sent?” Jeff’s brows lowered in concern. “It really does help with burns and skin wounds.”
She shook her head. “I don’t know. He doesn’t want me to come visit until he’s healed up a little more and he was too tired to attend Thanksgiving. I’m worried about him, but his girlfriend says he’s doing okay.”
Jeff grimaced. “I’m so sorry I wasn’t there to help you that night. I was a probie firefighter at the time and was still learning the ropes.”
She gave him a smile to make him feel better. “I don’t blame you, and I don’t think Emery does, either. It was years ago, and we were kids.”
“I can’t believe he’s waited this long to get the surgery.”
“He didn’t want to, but you know how it goes with money and insurance.” She shrugged it away. “It was a horrible accident that could’ve been prevented if we had detectors, which is why I want to do this calendar.”
Estelle is determined to help people when she couldn't help her brother. ;) There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list, the Snippet Sunday Facebook group, and the Rainbow Snippets Facebook group. A few of my favorites are, P.T. Wyant, Karen Michelle Nutt, Veronica Scott, Jessica Subject, J.D. Walker, Addison Albright, and Iris Blobel.
Here's the blurb to BURNING YULETIDE:
Estelle Three-Hearts has one goal for the holidays – finish her charity calendar for the ‘Smoke Detectors in Every Building’ program to provide fire safety for the citizens of Three Lakes. Luckily, her uncle is a captain for the fire department who’s recruited volunteers to pose for the sexy firefighter calendar. There’s nothing more fun to look at than half-naked firefighters all year round.
Mark Redfeather, a Firebird shifter, has learned to use his birthright for firefighting rather than fire-lighting. When his captain asked for volunteers for the charity calendar, he had no plans to participate – until he meets Estelle, and recognizes her as his mate.
Estelle is human and knows nothing about the Elder Races, but when an arsonist strikes her home and studio, Mark is forced to reveal his secret. Estelle must decide if he’s the monster she fears or the man who sets her heart on fire.
