In today's snippet, Dr. Aliandra Cantora (a dragon shifter) is speaking with Drake MacGregor, the town librarian (and vampire) and Tom Lance (a dragonet shifter who's too young to shift). They're talking about Thanksgiving, and Aliandra really wants a date with Drake. :)
Anger stirred at the hopelessness in the dragonet and she mustered up a cheery smile. “Well, then perhaps he’d let you join me for Thanksgiving at my home. You and Mr. MacGregor, both. What do you say?”
“I thought you’re on call that night.” Drake cocked his head.
“I am, but I don’t live far and I can be here in a flash.” She tried to still the sharp shot of fear he’d reject her invitation. “Would you join me for a Thanksgiving dinner?”
Drake exchanged a look with Tom and Aliandra held her breath. Why did she put herself out like this when she knew they could never have anything true? But she still hoped.
“We can’t let her be alone on Thanksgiving.” Drake spoke to Tom and the boy nodded gravely. They both turned to her and smiled. “We’d be delighted to share the holiday with you, Dr. Cantora. Can I bring anything to help in your feast?”
Relief and excitement cascaded through her and she grinned, her hands uncrimping from the edge of her desk. Damn, I hope I didn’t leave gouges.
“Perhaps mashed potatoes? I’m terrible at them.”
Drake laughed and arousal simmered just below the surface at the sound. “I haven’t had much luck with them either, but I make a mean steamed asparagus and have been known to pick some very good rolls from the bakery.”
Aliandra met his laugh with one of her own. “It’s a date, then.” She froze and flushed, wondering how she could be so forward. Her mother would be appalled, but she refused to take it back.
I love a woman who asks for what she wants. ;) There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list and in the Snippet Sunday Facebook group. A few of my favorites are Charley Descoteaux, Jeff Tsuruoka, Gem Sivad, Goran Zidar, Veronica Scott, and Iris Blobel. Here's the blurb for Order of the Dragon:
Drake MacGregor always adhered to the adage ‘let sleeping dragons lie’, until he slept with one.
In an effort to make up for his past as Vlad the Impaler, Drake has been living a small, quiet life in Three Lakes. As the town’s archivist, his knowledge of history and his place in it weigh on him. Drake has one desire—to rectify the atrocities committed in the name of his knightly order. Too bad he can’t keep his hands, or his fangs, off the local doctor, especially when he discovers she’s an actual dragon.
Aliandra Cantora del Viento is old enough and wise enough to ignore her attraction to the handsome historian, especially when her heart suggests he might be something more than he appears. Drake stokes her fires and curls her tail, and after a hot night in her clinic, the game is on. But he avoids her and nothing she tries breaks through his reserve, despite his obvious interest. He turns her on then apologizes for it, repeatedly. Not exactly the kind of relationship she’d hoped for yet she can’t walk away.
When a mysterious researcher arrives with his son, Drake becomes more edgy and irritable, and Aliandra must decide if she’s willing to fight for him. Especially when he might be her True Mate.
