In this snippet, Chief Petty Officer Kevin "Rimshot" Stanton has met with the private investigator, Jaime Hensen. She's trying to explain why this case might be exceptionally difficult.
“So you won’t help me?”
“I didn’t say that, Chief.” Jaime tried to push aside the feeling she’d already let this man down. “Assuming for a moment your sister really did go somewhere beyond this world, and that’s a huge assumption, I don’t have any contacts who’d know anything about that. You’d probably have better luck trying to contact the SNAIFU.”
He snorted in derision and she nodded. “Yeah, snowball’s chance in hell. I get that.”
A rueful smile quirked his lips and part of her danced an inner jig. I made him smile!
“But if there’s a chance she came back like the missing soldier did, and she currently resides somewhere in this country or world, I can probably find her.” She blinked and shook her head. “This sounds so crazy. Hypothetically speaking, do you really think there’s something out of Harry Potter going on here?”
Stanton rubbed the back of his neck with one hand. “That’s the thing, Ms. Hensen. I deal with facts and intel and provable events. But I’ve been a Special Warfare operator for a long time and I’ve seen stuff I didn’t think existed before I saw it. Not dragons or unicorns or anythin’ like that, but weird…stuff. If there is anythin’ Harry Potter goin’ on, Bethany’s screwed. But I gotta believe she’s somewhere here in our world. The powers-that-be just haven’t looked hard enough.”
Hey, I want something Harry Potter to happen to me. :D There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list and in the Snippet Sunday Facebook group. A few of my favorites are Charley Descoteaux, Jeff Tsuruoka, Gem Sivad, Goran Zidar, Veronica Scott, and Sarah Wesson. Here's the blurb for Rimshot's Hard Target:
Navy SEAL sniper Kevin “Rimshot” Stanton has had one thing on his mind for months: Find his sister. When a retired teammate suggests calling a private investigator specializing in missing persons, he takes a chance on the woman he’s lusted after since a friend’s wedding. He hopes she won’t mind mixing business with pleasure, because he wants more than just her professional expertise.
Jaime Hensen isn’t the kind of woman to settle down. She likes the wham-whir-thank-you-sir lifestyle. But the night she spends with Rimshot makes her want more. Too bad he’s a glacier outside the bedroom. She throws all her concentration into the job to ignore the hurt.
When Jaime’s investigation gets too close to a mysterious company hiring only women, she’s kidnapped and Rimshot suspects they’ve taken his sister as well. He’ll need every skill in his arsenal to save them.
Rimshot has one shot to get love right, and he’s not about to miss.
