I'm offering snippets of THE VALKYRIE'S SWORD, which is scheduled to release on January 17th 2017 if luck is with me, lol. This has been such a tough tale to write that I'm taking it one day at a time. But I think it's finally ready. Balder Templar is a former Sword of God assassin, but since Tiffany started haunting him (she's the ghost of his last victim), he's been a vagabond looking for redemption. Elder Races refers to beings who aren't human (werewolves, vampires, dragons, faeries, giants, selkies, ice demons etc.)
Welcome to Three Lakes, Michigan. He hoped he’d be welcome, but only if he hid who he’d been.
Despite the leaden skies, the town bustled with people out and about. Unease skittered up his spine, but he swallowed hard and kept going. The springtime migratory birds flitted beneath the deciduous trees lining the quaint avenues, their songs full of hope and renewal. He wished he could join in their jubilation, but new places made him nervous and the energy of this place sang along his nerves.
People joined them on the sidewalk, briskly walking to and from vehicles, ducking onto store fronts, or pausing to talk to each other. Balder kept his gaze moving, but didn’t allow it to connect with anyone. He didn’t want to be noticed yet.
:Balder, I think I know what’s different about this town.: Tiffany’s voice held wonder.
“Oh?” He shot a look around him to make sure no one overheard him talking to a ghost. “What’s the difference?”
:Most of the people here are Elder Races.: Her eyes grew round and she swallowed hard as she met his gaze.
Aw hell. An entire town of Elder Races? His gut sank. It had been three years since he’d been in the Sword of God, but the programming and indoctrination died hard. Most of the time he could ignore it, but periodically it would blare at him, trying to cage him in fear and sickness. Whenever it got the upper hand, Tiffany would rail at him for days until he broke free of its grip.
He’d really have to watch himself in this town.
Oh dear, talk about a challenge. ;) There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list and in the Snippet Sunday Facebook group. A few of my favorites are Charley Descoteaux, Karen Michelle Nutt, Veronica Scott, Gem Sivad, Jessica Subject, and Iris Blobel. Here's the blurb to THE VALKYRIE'S SWORD:
Svanhild isn’t looking for a new sword, even when one’s handed to her...
Svanhild Bjørnsdottir doesn’t need much—just a place to work in order to fix her Valkyrie motorcycle before moving on. As a fallen Valkyrie, she has no hope of settling down or returning to the Shield Maidens. Odin exiled her for defying him, and she’s not interested in going back, especially after arriving at the Fix-It Cave in Three Lakes, Michigan. But the last thing she’s looking for is love.
As a Blade in the fanatical Sword of God, a religious group bent on protecting humans from the Elder Races, Balder Templar is haunted by the ghost of his last target and his part in the deaths of her werewolf family. Hunting redemption and respite, his path leads him to Kate Blackamber, the Morukai shaman of Three Lakes. Kate knows who he is, what he’s done, and what he needs.
The Morukai lays a geas on both Svanhild and Balder—to help the other become part of the community. But when Balder rescues a little girl from an apartment fire and is recognized for his past, packmembers of the ghost arrive to demand retribution. In a town that abhors the Sword of God, Balder doesn’t have many defenders, but the Valkyrie may just be his saving grace.
This title should be available on Jan 17th 2017.
