In this snippet, Mark Redfeather was given a ride home to the fire station by Estelle Three-Heart. Now they're meeting the other firefighters hanging out in the rec room.
“What happened, Redfeather? Did you get lost?” Tommy Atherton snorted until he caught sight of Estelle. “Hello, what do we have here?”
Mark gritted his teeth before he beat Tommy into mulch for looking at Estelle like a Fire Bunny, one of the women who threw themselves at firefighters.
“Lost? No, that’s your schtick, Atherton.” Mark forced his voice to be even and easy. “And this is Estelle Three-Hearts, the photographer for the holiday charity calendar.”
Tommy’s eyebrows went up as the other guys got to their feet. “Really? She doesn’t look like a photographer.”
“And you don’t look like a firefighter lounging around in sweats and a wife-beater tank, but I assume because you’re here, you probably are one.” Estelle didn’t smile. “Is the captain in his office?”
The other men behind Tommy nodded and pointed toward the back.
“Thanks.” Estelle sailed past them without another look and Mark admired her gumption. She hadn’t been that cold to him in the Jeep, but he hadn’t suggested she was anything other than who she said.
“Damn, what the hell is her problem?” Tommy shook his head as Estelle disappeared into the captain’s office.
“I’m pretty sure it’s you, Atherton.” Mark rubbed his chin to keep his smile from leaking through. “If you don’t want to be treated like a dick, try harder not to be one, yeah?”
The truth often stings. ;) There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list, the Snippet Sunday Facebook group, and the Rainbow Snippets Facebook group. A few of my favorites are, P.T. Wyant, Karen Michelle Nutt, Veronica Scott, Jessica Subject, J.D. Walker, Addison Albright, and Iris Blobel.
Here's the blurb to BURNING YULETIDE:
Estelle Three-Hearts has one goal for the holidays – finish her charity calendar for the ‘Smoke Detectors in Every Building’ program to provide fire safety for the citizens of Three Lakes. Luckily, her uncle is a captain for the fire department who’s recruited volunteers to pose for the sexy firefighter calendar. There’s nothing more fun to look at than half-naked firefighters all year round.
Mark Redfeather, a Firebird shifter, has learned to use his birthright for firefighting rather than fire-lighting. When his captain asked for volunteers for the charity calendar, he had no plans to participate – until he meets Estelle, and recognizes her as his mate.
Estelle is human and knows nothing about the Elder Races, but when an arsonist strikes her home and studio, Mark is forced to reveal his secret. Estelle must decide if he’s the monster she fears or the man who sets her heart on fire.
