"His life changed when he learned the monsters were protecting him.”
Oh my, that unleashed a lot more words than I thought it would. I hope you enjoy a snippet of an upcoming tale, SECOND CHANCE WHISKEY, and Detective Edgar "Whiskey" Jamison.
Edgar gritted his teeth against the panic rising in his chest.
His life changed when he learned the monsters were protecting him. Hell, it changed when he realized the monsters were real, not just products of fairytales, horror stories, and Hollywood. Even his partner and friend, Chayse Wolffe, was one. Werewolf. He guessed it made sense given his partner’s last name, but shit, lots of humans had the same surname.
Edgar swallowed hard and braced his back against the cinder block wall as he caught his breath. He’d lived in Vegas pretty much all his life, and he’d seen some weird shit, not only as a teenager making his living on the Strip, but also as a cop in the LVMPD. But nothing had prepared him for the reality of the Elder Races.
That’s what they called themselves – Elder Races.
Probably because they live a helluva lot longer than humans.
He rubbed his hands over his face, the Vegas sunshine beating down on his back and shoulders as humans drove by in their cars, not even sparing him a glance. With the oddness that made up Vegas being so common, most folks didn’t bother to even raise an eyebrow anymore.
Which is why the Elder Races can hide here.
What was he going to do? His partner was a werewolf. His partner’s wife was a succubus, and his own girlfriend was a vampire. Not a wannabe, but a real, drank-blood-for-nourishment vampire.
He pushed himself off the wall and started jogging again, trying to outrun his anger, fear, and frustration. Felicia had introduced him to the lifestyle of BDSM, and it had opened his eyes to a kind of sexual pleasure he’d never felt in his life. It gave him discipline as well as freedom, and he found his greatest pleasure came from pleasing Her, his lady, his personal goddess, his Mistress.
He’d thought he knew what sexual pleasure was. Make sure his partner felt good, listen to their wants and needs, and get his own release at the end. Simple. But he’d been left with a minor feeling of ambivalence toward sex until he met Felicia, and she taught him the heights of connection and service. And that’s what he did best. As a cop, he was there to serve and protect, and she showed up the ultimate version of that creed.
But how could he serve a vampire?
He pushed himself hard despite the triple-digit heat until he reached his apartment building. He bounded up to the second floor and unlocked his door in the shade of the adobe corridor. The heat dropped a few degrees until he stepped into the cool of his apartment. He headed for the fridge for a bottle of water before keeping his body and mind moving to the bathroom to take a shower.
He stepped under the spray and laid his head against the cool tile, closing his eyes. The Domme/sub lifestyle had opened his eyes to peace and pleasure he’d never known. He’d do anything for Felicia. But he couldn’t get his detective’s mind around her need to consume blood.
Human blood. Where the hell does she get it? Does she hunt? Does she kill?
He groaned and shoved his head under the water, as if it would wash the unnerving thoughts out of his head. But he’d seen her move faster than possible, and hold a man three times her weight up against the wall one-handed. The man had been a bodybuilder who’d won big at the casinos and he thought he could throw his weight, and his money, around. He’d insulted Edgar and threatened to pummel the ‘pussy boy’ for serving a woman.
Felicia hadn’t taken kindly to the insults, and had the guy against the wall, struggling for breath as she asked him to apologize to Edgar. He sneered and asked Edgar if he always let his woman do the talking for him, but Felicia had grabbed his balls and twisted with her free hand.
The guy had whimpered an apology and she’d let him down with an admonition to get his fragile masculinity checked. The bouncers at Eve’s Paradise escorted the whimpering bodybuilder out the door. Edgar hadn’t minded her standing up for him. Dommes were meant to protect their subs. But the way she moved and her overwhelming strength had hit him as supernatural. Except no one noticed beyond him.
He shut the water off and stepped out of the shower, shoving his face into a towel as he replayed the conversation they’d had.
“What the hell was that, Felicia?”
“What was what, darling?” She’d shot him an enigmatic smile.
“Why did you hold that guy against the wall? How did you hold him there?”
She’d tilted her head. “He insulted my submissive, and that won’t do.”
Edgar had growled. “Be straight with me. Where did you get the strength to hold him like that? Are you on some sort of steroid?”
Felicia had frozen into a stillness he’d only seen in corpses. “No, no steroids.” She’d glanced around before taking him up to the office above the floor of the club. “Sit down, darling. I have something to tell you.”
She’d explained about the Elder Races and how all the monsters lived among the humans without detection. She’d shown him her canines and had pointed out the Wolffe brothers were werewolves, and even her boss wasn’t human. But despite that, they were less monstrous than the humans he dealt with every day.
“I want you to go home and take the time to understand this, Edgar.” She’d raised her chin and looked down her nose at him with her Domme expression. “You need to see beyond what you think you know to the truth. I don’t want to see you here again until you’ve moved beyond this prejudice.”
“Prejudice?” He’d gaped at her. “Felicia, you’re not even supposed to exist. How can I be prejudiced against a mythical creature?”
It had been the wrong thing to say and she’d escorted him out, instructing him not to return until he’d made some headway toward acceptance. That had been three weeks ago and he missed her, and her rough loving. But he was no closer to finding the acceptance she required.
What the hell am I going to do?
That's it for me this week. Check out how the prompt worked for the other flash fiction authors below and happy reading.
