The purpose here is to spotlight a few lines or a few paragraphs from a new release or backlisted title. This way my readers get to sample some delicious snippets and I'll do my best to tease, titillate and tantalize you into the weekend.
This week I'm teasing from THE VALKYRIE'S SWORD, an upcoming paranormal romance. It should be out to you by the end of this month! Svanhild is a fallen valkyrie and she's made it to the service station at the edge of town. That's where she meets Bart, a big bear ;) of a man.
Inside, the building smelled of used oil, rubber, wet cardboard, and metal. The proprietor came in from the service bay, wiping his hands on a dirty rag. He stood a little shorter than her own height, but he had shoulders broad enough to carry her bike across them and hands the size of serving platters from Odin’s table.
“Can I help you?”
Moment of truth. She pulled her helmet off her head and tucked it under her arm. His bushy brows rose up to his non-existent hairline and he tipped his head, but his expression remained curious.
“Ja, my bike died, and in this weather, babying her isn’t going to work. Not sure if it’s the fuel pump or carburetor. But she lost power about halfway here to nowhere and I’ve been coaxing her until I could find a town.”
The man nodded slowly. “Yeah, you got lucky, you did. Ain’t much up here for at least fifty miles. Good thing you made it to Three Lakes.”
“I’m glad I made it anywhere.” She shrugged. “I can fix her myself, but I needed parts and money, and I’m short on both.” She spread her hands. “So I need your help. Maybe you can direct me to a junkyard and let me use your shop for a bit, and I can get her running again.”
He shook his head. “No junk yard close by. But maybe we can work out a trade.”
Ah yes, here it comes. Her irritation rose and she waited for the come-ons. She expected him to lick his lips and fondle himself in hopes of getting some carnal activity.
“What kind of trade?”
“Sounds like you need a job and a bike fix. Why don’t you work for me for a short time?”
Svanhild raised her chin and narrowed her eyes. “Work for you how?”
He shrugged. “I have more business in the shop than I can handle at the moment, what with tourist season coming on, and I could use the extra help.” He ran his semi-clean hand over his bald head. “You help me work on any of the cars and bikes that come through, and I’ll trade you parts and help on fixing your ride. Deal?”
She blinked and her irritation gave way to surprise at his offer. “You’re offering me a job?”
“Yes, ma’am. Completely under the table, but still something to get you on your way and helps me get my shit done. Whadya say?”
