The purpose here is to spotlight a few lines or a few paragraphs from a new release or backlisted title. This way my readers get to sample some delicious snippets and I'll do my best to tease, titillate and tantalize you into the weekend.
So the tease: Since it's summer and HOT, I thought I'd tease you today with SECOND CHANCE SUCCUBUS, book 1 in the Capitol of Second Chances series. This is a paranormal murder mystery menage with BDSM elements, and PI Nik Wolffe is trying to find out why the cops would be asking about the Underground, the BDSM club Aislynn and Felicia run.
“What the hell happened, Felicia?” Nik followed the vampire across the club floor to the offices behind the bar.
“To what are you referring, Master Canin?”
The use of his Underground club name didn’t faze Nik in the least as he crossed his arms over his chest. He’d often used his size and mass to intimidate people into telling him what he wanted to know, but this time it was defensive. Felicia was a Domme in her own right, and men didn’t frighten her.
“I mean the stench of blood and strong cleaner in the Underground and the presence of the police in Eve’s.”
Felicia put on her stoic mask, one she’d perfected over the centuries, he suspected, and removed her robe. Under it she wore a small red lacy baby doll that hid very little and disguised nothing.
Nik didn’t allow his gaze to drop even while his dick screamed, But it’s red lingerie, right there, where you can touch it. Women had used the tactic on men for millennia and he wasn’t falling for it.
“There has been an incident in the Underground. It’s been taken care of, and Lady Aislynn is aware. The police are merely following up.” Felicia dipped her head and raised an eyebrow. “What’s your interest in it, Master Canin?”
“This wouldn’t have to do with the disappearance of Richard Johnson from Nebraska, would it?”
Both eyebrows went up. “What do you know of him?”
“Only that he came to Eve’s a couple of nights ago and never made it home.” He shrugged one shoulder. “His wife showed up in my office and hired me to find him.”
She scanned him with her cool gaze, her face a stoic mask. “Why do you think I’d know about him?”
Nik dropped his chin and stared at her from under lowered brows. “Come on, Felicia. Give me a little credit as an investigator. I tracked him here and you’re already twitchy about him. Where is he?”
She sighed, but the mask didn’t slip. “In the city morgue.”
Nik blinked. “Where?”
“The morgue, Master Canin. Richard Johnson is dead.” She scowled. “Exsanguination. Such a waste.”
Only a vampire would think of exsanguination as a waste. Nik went over the timeline in his head. “How do you know how he died?”
“Because I found the body. In the Underground.”
That must be where all the blood I smelled came from. “He was killed here?”
Felicia nodded, sitting in the chair behind the desk. “I cleaned up the mess, dressed the body, and dumped it in the alley at the Hump & Bump. We can’t have cops in the Underground, Master Canin. You know this.”
“Yeah, I also know you can’t let a murderer get away with this because what’s to stop him from doing again?” Nik scowled. “Where was the body when you found it?”
“In a cage suspended from the ceiling.”
“Chewed bones.” He shook his head. “We gotta find the perp, Felicia. Talk to Lady Aislynn and get her take on it. I suggest you let Detective Wolffe back in here to investigate.”
“But he’s a cop.”
“He’s also one of the Elder Races and knows how to keep a secret. Let him take a look at the original crime scene and he’ll catch the bastard.”
