The purpose here is to spotlight a few lines or a few paragraphs from a new release or backlisted title. This way my readers get to sample some delicious snippets and I'll do my best to tease, titillate and tantalize you into the weekend.
I'm teasing with DARWIN'S EVOLUTION, an Ultimate Recon/Hot SEALs Crossover novella that came out in January. In today's tease, retired Navy SEAL Cyrus "Darwin" Finch is sitting on the porch swing at Sadie's mom's place, getting to know Sadie a little better.
His cock stretched the fly of his jeans and he took a large swallow of beer just as Sadie’s gaze landed on him. Damn, her eyes held intelligence, beauty, and sharp awareness. There was no way she’d miss his hard-on no matter how much he shifted his hips.
“Thanks again for calling in your crew, Cyrus. I really appreciate it.” She bit her lip, tempting him to lean toward her to taste the beer on them. “It’s good to have backup.”
“It is and it’s no problem. It’s what we do. If it’s anything more than the usual greedy developer stereotype, we’ll find it and disable the threat before anything else happens.”
He’d meant to settle her concerns, but her shoulders tightened up. “Yeah, I’m sure your special forces guys are used to this kind of sneaky action. I’m used to head-on assaults and visible objectives. This underhanded shadow-shit is frustrating.” She sipped her beer. “You know, you said you served in the Navy for a time, but you seem right at home with the SpecOps shit. What did you do in the service?”
Cyrus took his own sip of his beer. “I was a DEVGRU SEAL.”
“Holy shit!” She shot him a wide-eyed look. “How long did you do that?”
He shrugged. “Twelve years or so. The last two were out of Coronado. I was the old man folks needed to be wary of in a profession where most men die young.” He winked.
Sadie laughed. “Duly noted. I was in Coronado. How come I never saw you on base?”
He winked again. “I’m a SEAL. You don’t see me unless I want you to.”
She snorted. “Right, you’d be a Ninja if you were Japanese.”
“Exactly.” He grinned and sipped his beer again. The malty liquid cooled his throat, but not his attraction. “But this Ninja does his homework, and you’re no slouch in terms of accolades, Master Sergeant Sadie Hawkins. The Bronze Star for Heroic Service in Iraq and Kuwait, conduct above and beyond the call of duty in Afghanistan, and meritorious service medals for your work in Coronado. You’re pretty hot stuff there, Hardass Hawkins.”
Sadie looked away, gritted her jaw, and said, “Thank you.”
Cyrus nodded slowly. “You don’t like hearing your accolades?”
She shrugged, her shoulders still tight. “I guess they were deserved, but so many folks around me died at the time, it’s hard to be proud of them.”
“Ah, I get it.” He took another sip of beer. “Have you told your mom at least?”
She nodded. “Yeah, she knows about the Bronze Star. That’s something she’d be pissed about if I didn’t tell her because my dad earned one posthumously. But the others? I don’t remember the actions that earned me some of them and the rest…” She trailed off, but he translated, I don’t want to remember.
