The purpose here is to spotlight a few lines or a few paragraphs from a new release or backlisted title. This way my readers get to sample some delicious snippets and I'll do my best to tease, titillate and tantalize you into the weekend.
This week I'm teasing from THE VALKYRIE'S SWORD, my paranormal romance recent release. Svanhild has stepped out onto the porch after visiting the local Morukai shaman, and the man she met there swooned at her feet. Unfortunately, it wasn't because of mutual attraction.
Svanhild lunged for the haunted man to keep his head from slamming into the wood as he fell. She caught his body and eased it to the boards, just as a ghost materialized beside him, shaking her head in exasperation.
“What’s wrong with him?”
The ghostly woman jumped and turned wide eyes on Svanhild. “You can see me?”
“Yes, I can see you. Hear you, too. What’s wrong with him? Does he have epilepsy?”
The ghost shook her head. “No, well, not really. Deep programming. He’s got this message on replay that demands he kill any Elder Races he finds, and the Morukai are at the top of that list.” She scowled at his pasty white face. “But every time he makes any strides toward overriding the programming, it overwhelms him and he faints.”
Svanhild added her own scowl. “Programming from whom?”
“Sword of God.”
She recoiled as if he’d turned to rotting meat and released him. “He’s Sword of God?”
The ghost snorted. “Recovering...more or less.”
The berserker rage rose again in Svanhild’s chest. She resisted the urge to pull out her knife and plunge it into the assassin’s back, ending the threat to herself and Kate. But while she fought dirty when in battle, she refused to kill someone who couldn’t fight back. She had no doubt she’d be able to overwhelm him either way, but it was cowardly to kill him while insensible.
“Why is he really here at the Morukai’s door?” Svanhild rose to her full height, the scowl tightening on her face.
“He’s here because we were drawn here and sent by Angelina to visit the ‘wise woman’.” The ghost’s chin rose in challenge. “I didn’t know a Morukai lived here. It just felt right to come.”
“Are you a fool? You could’ve endangered the Morukai with your insistence.”
“No, I’m not a fool, Valkyrie. He’s no longer an assassin. He’s trying to recover.”
“How do you know? He could snap at any time.” Svanhild crossed her arms over her chest.
“I’ve haunted him a long time. I know him well enough to say if he’s dangerous or not.” The ghost met her stare.
“What the hell happened out here?”
Kate’s question made both Svanhild and the ghost jump, but Svanhild recovered first.
“He had some sort of fit.”
“And you just let him collapse on my porch?” Kate knelt as Svanhild’s confidence slipped. “Jeez, did it ever occur to you there might be something really wrong with him?”
