The purpose here is to spotlight a few lines or a few paragraphs from a new release or backlisted title. This way my readers get to sample some delicious snippets and I'll do my best to tease, titillate and tantalize you into the weekend.
Today I'm teasing with my newest release, ROPE A FALLING STAR, which is now available! This is book 1 in the Triple Star Ranch series and is a contemporary romantic suspense set in Cheyenne, Wyoming, around Cheyenne Frontier Days. :) Tom Colton is talking with Annabelle, the ranch receptionist and gossip. She's been intimating that he's going on a date with Amber. We're in Tom's POV, but Amber is the first to speak as she walks up.
“Hi Annabelle, Mr. Colton. Are we late?” Amber raised her eyebrows.
“No, ma’am. Why?”
“Because you’re wearing a rather expectant expression and your knuckles are white in your jeans pockets. Everything okay?”
“Yes, ma’am. Everything’s great. Are you ready to go?” Tom tried to remember how to think after being blindsided by extraordinary beauty.
“Yep. I have everything I need with me.”
“Uh, good. Good.” He nodded like a bobble-head. “Okay, so we’re gonna run errands, Annabelle. If Trip or anyone needs me, I’ll have my phone on me. But we should be back in time for supper.”
“Good to know. I’ll just write that down and spread the word. Have a good trip.” She winked, but Tom only nodded and gestured for Amber to step out in front of him.
They didn’t speak until they got out to his truck. He unlocked it, but strangled the gentleman inside him before he opened the door for Amber. She struck him as a woman who liked to take care of a few things on her own and he didn’t want to insult her. He’d open doors to buildings for her, but figured she’d prefer to get in and out of the truck herself. He settled into the driver’s seat and started the truck, noting the frown on her face.
“How’d your morning sessions go? Everything okay?”
“Hmm? Oh, yes, everything went fine.”
“If that’s so, why are you frowning?” He headed for the interstate.
“You didn’t tell Annabelle that we’re on a date, did you?” She met his gaze with frank intensity.
“No, ma’am.” He lost his smile and shook his head to emphasize his negation. “That would be like fanning a fire of misinformation. That woman is a leaky hose of gossip. She’d ruin a man’s reputation just for a few gaping mouths and wide stares.”
“Yes, she would. She sure does like to stir the shit pot.”
He barked a laugh that brought out a smile on Amber’s face. “Too bad we can’t get her to lick the spoon.”
“Eww!” She grinned and Nimbus barked. “So where are we going today?”
“Well, I thought we’d make sure to get Nimbus some dog food so I can have it on hand. Just in case.” He winked and she rolled her eyes as he turned onto the on-ramp to I-25. “Then we should get some lunch at Two Doors Down, some fresh apple turnovers at The Bread Basket bakery, and dessert at the Infused Buttercream Cupcakery.”
“This sounds suspiciously like a date.”
“Not a date.” He shook his head. “We’re goin’ into town for errands and we gotta eat. What’s the point of eating separate when we’re in the same truck?”
