The purpose here is to spotlight a few lines or a few paragraphs from a new release or backlisted title. This way my readers get to sample some delicious snippets and I'll do my best to tease, titillate and tantalize you into the weekend.
Today I'm teasing with my upcoming release, ROPE A FALLING STAR, now available for pre-order! This is book 1 in the Triple Star Ranch series and is a contemporary romantic suspense set in Cheyenne, Wyoming. :) This is the opening scene, where Tom Colton doesn't quite make the 4th championship title.
Adrenaline surged through Tom Colton’s veins, giving him a natural high until his body landed in the dirt of the arena three seconds before the buzzer rang. Fortunately, the surge deadened some pain from the impact as he rolled away from the flashing hooves of his mount. The bronc’s front feet came down close to his head, spattering dirt and sand into his open mouth. His teeth ground against each other as he tried to get up while the rodeo riders chased after the bronc, jerking at the flank strap.
Tom lurched to his booted feet and searched for his hat in an attempt to quell the rising disappointment. Wooden Nickel hadn’t looked that strong or mean, but the little bastard could twist like a psychotic yoga instructor. The look in the roan bronc’s eyes when the boys opened the chute reminded him too much of the stallion in that animated kids’ movie about the wild horses of the Cimarron. He’d had enough time to think, Aw hell, before the horse took off like a bat out of hell.
Yeah, if bats could twist into a black hole and turn inside out.
His guts definitely felt inside out as the adrenaline drained out of him like someone had pulled the plug. The weight of his thirty-one years coupled with the disappointment of an unfinished ride crashed into him all at once. He could barely convince his legs to move across the arena after he retrieved his hat. He thumped it against his leg to knock the dirt out of it before he dumped it on his head.
Wouldn’t that just be a kick in the gut?
“Aw, too bad, folks. Give Tom Colton a round of applause. Three-time champion bronc rider from right here in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Tom has competed in Cheyenne Frontier Days for the last ten years…”
The announcer’s voice faded from his awareness as Tom reached the chutes. Max Darnell waved him over to the gap in the fence and slapped him on the back as he came through.
“Tough break, Colton. I told you Wooden Nickel kicked the shit out of everyone.”
Tom nodded, but had to admit he wasn’t sure it was just the horse. His heart hadn’t been in the rides lately. Oh he loved the roar of the crowds, the adrenaline rush of trying to stay on the back of a half-ton animal desperate to be rid of him. But the pounding his body took and the inevitable injuries overshadowed the joys he received. The rush no longer made up for them.
“You really retirin’ after this CFD?” Max shut the gate.
“Yup. That was my last ride.” When he said it that way, it sounded pathetic. So much for going out on a high note.
“Aw, man, I’m real sorry.”
Tom shrugged, ignoring the hitch in his shoulder. Damn, must’ve landed harder than I thought. He’d have to ice it if he wanted to walk straight tomorrow.
