Today I'm offering snippets from my newest release The Ivory Road: Outback Dreams, an action/adventure sci-fi/fantasy with romantic elements, and Book 2 in the The Ivory Road serial. Iliana and Taggart are filming a rescue scene. She's hanging over a "cliff" and her arm is starting to bother her. She thinks it's part of the workout she's getting.
Tears started in her eyes as she groaned in effort, tightening her muscles to haul her body weight up the cliff face. Pain intensified, but she pushed it aside to focus on gaining purchase on the slippery rocks. Snow and ice dug into her arms and chest despite the oiled duster and the scent of wet stone filled her nose. Gotta make this look good. Though Taggart held her only a few feet above the ground, the audience would see a much larger gap between her feet and the floor of the gully. Gotta love green screens and C.G.
They strained together until he hauled her body to the edge of the cliff. She landed in a heap on top of him with a moan. Damn, my arm hurts. She rolled off and caught her breath, allowing her head to hang as she focused on remembering her lines through the pain throbbing in her arm.
After a count of fifteen, Taggart looked over at her. “There, now we're even. Are you all right?”
She opened her mouth to give him a sarcastic remark, but stopped at his exhausted expression. “Yeah, now I’m okay. Thanks for the help.”
She rubbed a hand over her face, but the pain in her right arm expanded and she held it with her left, grimacing in real pain. Why did her arm hurt so much?
“What’s wrong, Kyra?”
She shook her head and peeled her coat off her shoulders to look at her arm. When she rubbed the offending limb, her sleeve turned red with blood. What the hell? The pain intensified and she swooned a little in shock.
Taggart caught her against his chest. “Are you all right, Kyra? What have you done to your arm?”
“I don’t know. Must have cut it on the ice.”
He helped her pull back her sleeve to expose her arm. A recently healed gash seeped blood and Iliana’s breath stopped. That’s the wound I got from the Knalish soldier outside the oasis. In the Karobis desert. It’s all real.
Iliana shook her head and tried to focus. They’re still rolling. “Rough landing. Don’t worry. It’s just a scratch. I’ll be fine.” This was pure add-libbing, but it worked for the scene.
