Today Rimshot's Hard Target is now available at Amazon and I'm offering snippets. It's technically Book 3 in the Bad Boys of Beta Squad series, crossing over with Cat Johnson's Hot SEALs. CPO Kevin Stanton is talking Petty Officer "Deli" Rubenovich before he meets with Jaime to sign the contract.
Kevin tucked into his burger and fries when they arrived, his mind homing back to his missing sister. Bethany never strayed far from his thoughts, especially now with Jaime’s involvement. Usually, the thought of Bethany’s disappearance made his gut ache, but now a slow smile curled his lips. If Jaime succeeded, he’d get to both spend more time with her and see his sister again.
“Hey, what’s the grin for, Rimshot?”
Kevin blinked as the bar and his table companion came back into focus. “What?”
“You’re grinning like the Cheshire Cat at your food. Something extra tasty?”
“Nah, it’s fine. Just thinkin’ about my sister.”
“Thinkin’ about your sister makes you grin?”
Kevin gave a one-shouldered shrug.
“Or is it that sexy red-head Chris told you to call?”
Kevin had to slip on the Samurai Mask to keep from blushing. “Could be.”
Deli laughed. “Thought so. So will she take the case?”
“Yeah, I called her. We’re meetin’ later to sign the contract and get details ironed out.”
“That’s good, right? I mean, she’s a professional and all.”
Yeah, it was good, if Jaime could actually do anything. But if the U.S. Army with their special SNAIFU squad couldn’t do it, he didn’t have a lot of hope for a civilian. Don’t knock it till you try it. He knew better than to voice his doubts, though. Jaime would walk and then no one would help him find Bethany.
“Yeah, she’s professional. I’m givin’ it a chance. If it don’t work, I’ll be no worse off.” Kevin nodded. “Better’n the old man. He’s not doin’ a damn thing about it, even when Bethany disappeared right off his estate.”
“Damn, that’s messed up. Sounds like your family needs better security.” Deli swallowed the bite of pizza he had in his mouth and grimaced. “Damn west coast. Can’t make a decent pie even when you pay ’em.”
Deli’s complaint made Kevin chuckle. “Yeah, well the next time you have time, you can school ’em, Deli.”
“Eh, I don’t have time. Heathens.”
Kevin laughed. “I’m sure you could teach ’em to do it right.”
Deli grumbled, but kept eating.
“You said you knew about a new security company last night at Bronco’s party. What was all that about?”
“What, GAPS?” Deli took a swig of beer to wash down the pizza.
“Yeah. What does it stand for?”
“It’s pretty slick. Guardian Angel Protection Services, precision security to fill in the GAPs in yours.” Deli grinned. “We cover your six when God’s too busy.”
“Well hell, that is slick. How do you know so much about it?”
“I got a buddy who’s part of the core crew. Rick Mann. You ever worked with him?”
“Nah, why would I?”
Deli shrugged. “I was on a joint op in Afghanistan and partnered with him before I came here to Beta Squad. We kept in touch after and that’s how I found out about his new venture.”
“He still active and doin’ this at the same time?”
“Nah, he was medically retired here a while back.”
Kevin grunted. “What kind of protection services do they offer?”
“Mostly large scale cargo and shipments from big companies in hot zones.” Deli shrugged. “Or places that aren’t considered hot but could get that way damn fast, especially without the right kind of operators. Most of these guys are retired SEALs.”
