Today I'm offering snippets from my newest release The Ivory Road: Outback Dreams, an action/adventure sci-fi/fantasy with romantic elements, and Book 2 in the The Ivory Road serial. Iliana has retreated to her room before the filming that morning to text her best friend back in the States. She's worried she's going crazy, but she needs to hear it from a friend. The bold type is her texts.
You’re going to think I’m weird, but I swear on the Golden Oscar I’m not kidding. She paused, wondering how she could make him understand in a text when she barely understood herself. I think I stepped across a dimensional boundary into an alternate world and met a guy. She hit send and held her breath.
Seconds ticked by and Iliana bit her lip, but remembered to breathe. If anyone would believe her, it was Colin. He’d seen the best and worst of her as her roommate and original fuck-buddy. They’d come to the conclusion they made better friends/family than lovers, but they remained close and always turned to each other when things got emotionally rough. God knows I’ve helped him with all his boyfriends and girlfriends.
Dimensional boundaries like in sci-fi flicks? You haven’t gotten into the Kool-Aid again, have you?
I’m serious, Colin.
He didn’t reply and Iliana’s heart sank. Damn, now he thinks I’m crazy. If ever she needed someone to believe her, it was now, and she’d hoped Colin would understand. She dropped her head back and closed her eyes. Maybe I am crazy. Maybe I had a fever dream and imagined it all.
Her phone rang with the X-Files theme song and she opened her eyes in surprise. “Hello?”
“Okay, Iliana, ’fess up. Did you really do something out of a fantasy novel?”
“Colin.” She breathed his name out with a relieved sigh. “Yes. I swear I’m not making this up. I closed my eyes one minute and was in a completely different desert the next.”
“You know how crazy this sounds, right?”
“Yeah, I know. That’s why I haven’t told anyone but you. You know me, Colin. Would I make anything like this up?”
There was a long pause on the other end of the line. “No, you’re too driven and determined to make it in the crazy town. Despite me telling you that you have to out-crazy everyone else here.” He sighed and she could almost see him wave his hand as if brushing everything away. “Okay, let’s just agree you did really cross into an alternate world. You said you met a guy?”
“Yeah.” She rubbed a hand over her forehead.
“Uh-oh, the way you say that you fell for him.” He laughed. “You fell for a fantasy guy. I know you have a great imagination from all those fantasy books you read, but come on.”
“I really wish he was a book boyfriend, Colin. But it was more than that. I was there with him. He shared an adventure with me. Hell, he beat the crap out of me several times at sword practice.”
“Sword practice? Is that a euphemism?”
“Focus, Colin. That isn’t the worst part.”
“There’s a worst part?” Colin snorted. “It’s bad enough you got your ass kicked by an imaginary playmate.”
“He looks exactly like Taggart Crowe.”
A pregnant pause stretched out the seconds and Iliana dropped her chin to her chest. Here it comes.
