Authors: this is a great opportunity to spotlight a few lines or even a paragraph or two from a new release or backlisted title. Readers: you get to sample some delicious snippets! We’ll do our best to tease, titillate and tantalize you into the weekend.
It's a new year and I had two new releases this month! Yes! The first one is BAM-BAM'S INKED HART, Bad Boys of Beta Squad, Book 3, and came out January 12th! *Happy Dance* The second is DARWIN'S EVOLUTION, an Ultimate Recon/Hot SEALs Crossover novella that came out January 26th. That's a lot of Navy SEAL reading for you. :D
In today's tease, Cyrus "Darwin" Finch managed to have lunch with Sadie and her mother Clarice. Cyrus doesn't mind. He's the first one to speak.
She turned around, her eyebrows up and her gaze wary until she recognized him. Fortunately she didn’t frown. In fact, if he had to guess, he’d say she looked relieved.
“Cyrus? What are you doing here?”
“I was just heading back to my hotel when I saw you step in here, and I thought I’d try to catch you.” He dipped his head with a warm smile.
“Who’s this, Sadie? Won’t you introduce me?” The older woman beside her eyed Cyrus with frank and curious appraisal, a smile not unlike Sadie’s curling her lips.
“Oh yes, sorry. Mom, this is Cyrus Finch. I met him on the train ride here.” Sadie gestured to the woman. “Cyrus, this is my mother, Clarice Hawkins.”
“Pleased to meet you, ma’am.” He dipped his head and extended his hand to shake hers. “It was a chance meetin’ this morning on the train. I practically drooled on Sadie’s shoulder.”
“So you already have him drooling over you, huh, Sadie?” Clarice grinned and winked. “Well done, m’girl. Why don’t you join us for lunch, Cyrus?”
“Well, ma’am, I’d be delighted if it’s all right with Sadie.” He shot a look at her, not wanting to blow his chances before he’d even had one. And he wouldn’t be party to a familial ambush.
“Yes, that would be fine.” Sadie smiled just as the hostess came to guide them to a table. “I hope you don’t mind sushi.”
He shook his head. “No, ma’am. I developed a taste for it after my time in California.”
“Oh, is that where you’re from, Cyrus?” Clarice asked as they followed the hostess into the dining room.
They sat and ordered drinks before he could answer her question. “No, ma’am. I’m from a little town in Colorado called Cloudburst. It sits in the mountains above Durango. I was stationed in California before I retired.”
Clarice beamed. “In the Marines like my daughter?”
“No, ma’am, I was in the Navy. You know, the guys always givin’ the Marines a ride.” He winked at Sadie and she grinned.
“And what do you do now, Cyrus?”
“Mom, do you think you could save the interrogation until after we eat? He’s not applying for a job here.” Sadie laid her hand on her mother’s arm.
“I’m just interested in this young man of yours.”
“He’s not mine, Mom. I just met him this morning.”
But I want to be yours, Ms. Sadie. He had no idea where the thought came from, but he couldn’t argue with it. He did want to be hers. This is crazy. Love at first sight happened only in fairytales, not the real world where he lived. But if there was one thing he’d learned in the Navy, he needed to take any opportunity that presented itself because it wouldn’t come around again.
