It's December and with the holidays around the corner, I thought I'd give some snippets of Christmas I.C.E. Magic, a paranormal romance set on Christmas Eve. Lily has been rescued by Zach, and he's promised to show her "the magic" she's so desperately seeking after the death of her twin brother. She get's much more than she's bargained for.
“Okay, no matter what happens, don’t run out the door until I’ve had a chance to explain.”
Lily raised an eyebrow, but nodded.
Zach exhaled and let the energy of his people flow back into full bloom. His human disguise dampened it, though any other supernatural creature would recognize him. A harmonic hum filled his ears and he closed his eyes as the ice crystals grew along his shoulders, over his chest and belly, and jaw. The air around him became superheated and he pulled his sweater over his head before he glanced at Lily.
She gasped and stumbled back, her knees catching on the chair he’d put there for that reason. Zach reached out to steady her, but she yelped and scrambled for the bed, her eyes wide.
“Oh, my God.” Lily curled into a ball and all the color drained from her face again. “You’re all white again with those blue shadows. What the hell are you?”
He put up both hands in a placating gesture. “Easy, Lily, calm down. You said you wanted to see the magic and I’m showing it to you.”
“You have claws! Oh, my God. Are you the Abominable Snowman?”
Her question struck him with its absurdity and he threw back his head with a laugh.
“You are! You even have fangs.”
“The Abominable Snowman is a myth, even among my people.” Zach crouched at the end of the bed to remove his boots and socks. Wearing so much clothing always made him melt—literally.
“Your people? You mean, humans?”
“I’m not human, Lily.” He raised his gaze to hers and dropped his smile. “My people are called Ice Demons. We make the winter weather in the world. Blizzards, avalanches, even spring snowfalls. That’s all us.”
“Ice Demons.” Her gaze slid over his body, stopping to take in his crystal hair. “Is that ice on your head and face?”
“Kind of. It’s a hard keratin substance a lot like your hair, but instead of burning when it gets really hot, it melts.” Zach stood and unzipped his pants. Damn, the temperature in the cave had increased.
“What are you doing?” If anything, her eyes grew wider.
“Getting undressed. It’s really hot in here.”
“Uh…are Ice Demons anything like humans without clothing?”
Zach grinned. Her concern over nudity gave him hope she’d started to regain an interest in life. “You mean do I appear naked like a porn star?”
Lily blinked then blushed. “Yeah.”
He tipped his head. “Yes, just like that.” Then he dropped his pants.
