Authors: this is a great opportunity to spotlight a few lines or even a paragraph or two from a new release or backlisted title. Readers: you get to sample some delicious snippets! We’ll do our best to tease, titillate and tantalize you into the weekend.
Today I'm offering snippets of Bronco's Rough Ride, the first story in the Bad Boys of Beta Squad books. It's the prequel to The Navy's Ghost and Rimshot's Hard Target, and tells the story of how John Andrews met his wife. In this tease, Lindsey is talking to her undercover handler, Courtney, explaining the situation and how she needs it to change. "Jenna" is Lindsey's undercover persona.
Courtney nodded. “Right, so what do you need from me?”
“Two things.” Deep breath, Jarvis. “I need a nullifier for the ketamine. I won’t be able to carry this guy out. He’s at least two hundred pounds of solid muscle, so he’ll need to move a little under his own power.”
“Got it. And the second thing?”
“I want out after this. I’m done with deep undercover. The world is getting dark and sickening and I’m losing myself to it.” Lindsey shook her head. “I’ve put in the paperwork for regular detective in the sex crimes unit. I’ll finish this mission, but I gotta get back to being myself and not some psychotic bitch bent on hurting men. Especially military men. That’s the last straw, Court.”
“Roger that.” Courtney shared Lindsey’s military background. “I’ll let the captain know. And I’ll get the lab on a nullifier for ketamine.”
“Good. Do it quick. I want to get him out this weekend. Even as in shape as he is, his body can’t take more than a couple of weeks of dosing.”
The last guy’s body had been found covered in ants in the middle of the Las Vegas Wash not far from where they ran now. The ME said he’d died of heart failure from a ketamine overdose. I won’t let that happen to John.
“I’ll need the nullifier by Friday morning. Have a safe house ready by that evening if you can. If not, the latest is Saturday.” Lindsey slowed down to a walk as they neared the parking lot. “The Man Cave Club is only really busy on those two nights and that’s the only way I can sneak him out.”
Courtney nodded as she grabbed her ankle behind her thigh. “When I got what you need I’ll text you and bring the nullifier to the regular place. What’s your exit strategy?”
“Drunk couple headed home for sex.” Lindsey shrugged. “I don’t expect him to be steady on his feet and if we come out through the club, we’ll blend in with the other partiers.”
“What about cameras and bouncers?”
“We can duck the cameras and the bouncers will see what they expect.” Lindsey stretched out her quads as she scanned the parking lot for anyone who might be close enough to listen. “Just make sure there’s a safe house. We’ll both need a place to lay low for a few days.”
Her handler met her gaze. “This is the last one of these. I really can’t do this anymore. I’m serious.”
Courtney nodded. “All right, Jenna. I’ll put in the paperwork if you’re sure.”
