Today I'm offering snippets from my newest release The Order of the Dragon, a paranormal romance, and Book 1 in the Warbler Peninsula series. Drake has come by Aliandra's home to apologize for being rude to her at the library, and they're having dinner. Until Aliandra suggests maybe he's been hiding from something in Three Lakes. We're in Drake's POV.
Drake resisted the urge to bolt out of Aliandra’s home. Two things wrong with doing that. First, it was supremely rude, and second, she was likely faster than him, even in her human form. But he couldn’t tell her about his shortcomings. Not yet.
He tried to cover his unease with a short laugh. “Yes, well, I’ve been out of the dating scene for centuries now and haven’t quite gotten the hang of these modern times yet.”
Aliandra snorted. “This is you “not getting the hang” of the dating scene? Did panic work back when you were a young man?”
He grimaced. “No, not then, either.”
She sighed and set her empty plate aside. “Look, Drake. I get it. You’re a vampire and I’m a dragon. I don’t know what your past was like, but we’re not in your past. We’re here, now, and we’re both adults. What’s the problem?”
“But should we be dating? Especially because I’m a vampire and you’re a dragon.”
“Is that what we’re doing? Dating?” She snorted and shook her head. “Call me old fashioned, but having a guy have sex with me once and avoid me from then on doesn’t count as dating in my mind.”
Chagrin ate at him from the inside. He’d come to her house to apologize, but now he’d gotten fangs-deep in uncharted waters and had lost track of what he’d intended. And sharing that kiss before dinner hadn’t helped his concentration.
Drake cleared his throat. “Perhaps this wasn’t such a good idea.”
“Coming here tonight to apologize.” He wiped his mouth on his napkin and gathered himself to get up. “I should probably go—”
“Sit.” Her voice hadn’t risen, but the sharp order solidified him to his chair.
He raised his gaze to meet her peacock-green eyes and swallowed hard at the anger and lust swirling there. “You want to make it up to me, Drake? Stop apologizing for something I liked. Stop regretting. Life is far too long to wallow in regret. Do you want to know how you can make it up to me?”
He swallowed hard at the fire in her gaze. “How?”
“Feed from me and make love with me.”
“What part didn’t you understand?”
“You want me to…to feed from you? Again?” Lust and desire warred with shame and guilt from her request.
“Yes.” Aliandra raised her chin. “You said you wanted to make it up to me.”
“But by doing the same thing I apologized for?” Drake couldn’t believe he argued with her when his heart screamed for him to take her up on the offer.
Aliandra stared at him for several heartbeats and he felt the opportunity slipping away as she sighed. “Fine. Thank you for the flowers and for sharing dinner with me.”
