CHRISTMAS I.C.E. MAGIC is now out and I'm teasing from it's pages. Best part, it's a Holiday Romance and paranormal as well. Zach has convinced Lily to eat if he promises to answer her questions. But he has a few of his own.
“Back up a minute. Explain ‘the magic of life’ a little. What do you mean by that?” He smiled as she frowned and drank the rest of her soup from the bowl. “Want some sweet bread?”
“No, thank you.”
“Come on. It’s Christmas Eve.” He rose and hauled out his stash within his pack. The bread hadn’t survived the frenzied rush from the avalanche unmarked, but it smelled good and retained most of its shape. “See? Still good.”
She laughed at the misshapen lump of sweet bread he handed her and lifted it to her nose. “What is it?”
“The last of the Challah bread from the Hanukah celebrations we had a couple weeks ago. It came early this year, but the guests requested it for all of December, so they made extra.” He watched her take a small bite. “So what’s the magic of life?”
“Everyone knows what it is.”
He shrugged. “What’s your definition of it?”
Lily chewed on her bread as her nose scrunched in thought. He had the sudden desire to lick the crinkled skin and sat forward with his own bread to diffuse the urge.
“I don’t know. The excitement, the spark, whatever makes people get up in the morning ready to take on the day.” She swallowed hard and dropped her gaze to the riffles of her scarlet bag. “The magic to see the extraordinary in the ordinary. I don’t see it anymore. It’s gone. It has been since…”
“Since what?” Zach wanted to grasp her hand to offer her comfort, but he didn’t want to interrupt her thoughts. He had to keep her talking. “Since what, Lily?”
“Since my brother Linus died.” A wealth of pain filled her voice and she dropped the sweet bread to her lap and closed her eyes. “He took it with him when he left. Nothing tastes good anymore. The excitement is gone. The world is gray.”
