The purpose here is to spotlight a few lines or a few paragraphs from a new release or backlisted title. This way my readers get to sample some delicious snippets and I'll do my best to tease, titillate and tantalize you into the weekend.
Today I'm teasing with my newest release, ROPE A FALLING STAR, which is now available! This is book 1 in the Triple Star Ranch series and is a contemporary romantic suspense set in Cheyenne, Wyoming, around Cheyenne Frontier Days. :) Tom Colton is sharing cupcakes with Amber at his favorite eatery and their conversation gets serious.
The flavor hit his taste buds like lightning, but it didn’t manage to distract him from Amber’s enjoyment of her cupcake. Damn. He wouldn’t be able to share the rest of the cupcakes with her. Unless she comes over to my house and she’s naked.
Oh, that was the wrong thing to think. His cock filled out the last of the space in his tight jeans. He drank some tea and scanned the room, watching as a family with young children came in. He watched the parents lift them up and show them the pretty confections, and his heart melted a little. So did his hard-on.
“Aw, they’re so cute.” Amber had followed his gaze to the little ones making their selections. “That must be fun to do.”
Tom blinked back to the present. “Yeah, I can see that. Have you ever thought about having kids?”
All the joy drained out of her face as she shot him a wary look. “Why do you ask?”
“I dunno.” He backpedalled with a quick shrug. “Seeing them doing this with kids is sweet. I guess I’d like to do it with my kids some day.”
“Oh.” She nodded and shot a look at the family again. “Yeah, that would probably be fun.” She set her cupcake wrapper aside and wiped her mouth with a napkin. “Not much likelihood of that happening to me, though.”
“Oh? Why not?”
She grimaced and the corners of her mouth turned down. “Too old. I’m already over forty. Not so great to start having kids after that decade.”
“Forty’s not old.”
“It is for having kids.” She gathered up her things and finished her tea. “You said we have a couple of other places to stop. We should get on that.” She rose and Nimbus pressed against her leg in comfort.
Shit. Way to go, jackass. Something he’d said had set her off. What did he do? Tom puzzled over their conversation as they left the cupcakery and headed for his truck. They’d talked about age and kids, but he couldn’t imagine what he’d said wrong. Most women don’t like to admit their age. Maybe, but he didn’t think that was it. Or at least, not all of it.
Maybe it’s about marriage and kids. He wanted to ask if she’d ever consider getting married, but he didn’t think now was the time. Besides, it would come across like a back-handed proposal. He mentally shook his head. Now that would be a minefield.
He unlocked the truck and she loaded herself in without his help. The easy humor and camaraderie they’d shared at lunch was gone. Amber had walled herself shut and he had no idea how to break through again. Hell, he didn’t even know what he’d said to set her off.
