I'm sure a lot of you know about #CockyGate and the audacity of a lazy author (yes, she thinks trademarking = branding) trying to trademark a common word. In response, a lot of authors have gotten together to fight the stupidity. There are two anthologies out now to do just that. The first anthology is COCKTALES by the Cocky Collective. The second anthology is THE COCKY COCKERS, A Cocky Author Production. The proceeds from this anthology will first be used to defray any legal costs associated with its publication. It's currently on pre-order and will be out June 25th 2018.
My 5K tale is called THE COCKY CANINE CAPER, and Detective Rhiannon is dealing with a lot of dog-napping cases around small-town Nevada.
Detective Rhiannon Mulvaney narrowed her eyes at the distraught young man with a thatch of curly brown hair and freckles, trying for patience. Why the hell did I take this case again? Dog-napping wasn’t usually a way to make a detective’s career, and this appeared to be shaping up as a wild goose chase. Or wild dog chase, as the case may be.
“I’m serious. This car came out of nowhere, swerved to hit me and the dog, then the passenger tried to shoot me.” The guy waved at the wooden slats of the fence behind him. “We jumped out of the way, and they sped off.”
Rhiannon nodded. “Did you get the make or model of the car?”
“Of course I did.”
Glory save me from arrogant boys with dogs. “And that was?”
“It was a black or blue minivan. Maybe dark gray. Looked kinda like a dolphin with a sloped front end.”
She ground her teeth. So I’m looking for a dolphin minivan that could be blue, gray, or black. Great. “Did you catch the license plate?”
“Nevada plate, C O K 1 something. I didn’t see the last of it.” The guy shook his head. “You gotta catch these guys. This is my friend’s dog, and he’s a champ. They shot at us.”
Just the facts, sir, none of the attitude, thanks. ;) There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list, the Snippet Sunday Facebook group, and the Rainbow Snippets Facebook group. A few of my favorites are, P.T. Wyant, Karen Michelle Nutt, Veronica Scott, Jessica Subject, Kathy Griffith Karysa Faire, and Iris Blobel.
Here's the blurb for my tale THE COCKY CANINE CAPER: A Callowwood Pack Short
Aaron Wulf is a loner, an alpha werewolf. And he’s content with his life until his roommate brings a champion Cocker Spaniel into his home to protect it from dog-napping while its owner is out of town.
Detective Rhiannon Mulvaney has a real dog of a case. Someone’s dog-napping Kennel Club champs, and she’s determined to catch the culprits. But when she meets Aaron, the case gets much more interesting.
Maybe police work isn’t just for the dogs.
What do you get when you cross cocky heroes and heroines with Cocker Spaniels? Why, Cocky Cockers, of course.
All the stories in this anthology feature a Cocker Spaniel and a happily-ever-after (or happy-for-now) ending. How they get there? Well, that's all the fun!
Warning: The stories in this anthology run the gamut from G to NC-17 ratings and include examples of nearly every subgenre--including contemporary, historical, paranormal, and steampunk--as well as m/f, m/m, and f/f pairings.
Proceeds from this anthology will first be used to defray and legal costs associated with its publication, and secondarily donated to the Romance Writers of America's Perseverance Fund.
