DELI'S TAKE OUT, Bad Boys of Beta Squad, Book 4 is available now, but even better, it's available in PAPER too. It has direct ties to Rimshot's Hard Target and Darwin's Evolution.
In this snippet, Deli has made it to the great outdoors and lucky him, he encounters a bear. But he also encounters a familiar friend.
Oh shit, now what? The bear rocked its weight between its two front feet and roared. The dog responded by crouching and leaping to the side, taking the bear’s attention with it. Deli suspected both animals knew he was there but had more immediate concerns. He watched the ursid try to outflank the canid, but the dog appeared to be leading the bear toward the far end of the meadow.
Away from me…
The dog’s tactics pulled up a memory from his time in the Navy before he joined the SEALs. He’d been a dog handler, working with the animals who’d go into the field as SAR and bomb sniffers. He’d helped train several dogs from shepherds and malinois to a few Labradors and a couple of short-haired collies. But one dog stood out in his memory of his time at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland. Her name had been Sergeant Trace and despite her muttly appearance as a blue heeler with a black spot covering her left eye and ear, she’d been smart, determined, and loyal, and she’d often drawn attackers away from her handler when threatened.
Deli focused on the dog and the markings on her coat while she teased the bear away from his position. Holy shit, that’s Trace. The way the dog moved showed her age and her experience, but the same moves Deli had seen in the pup who came to the JBSAL played out in front of him. The question became, how did he save the dog without endangering the bear? California took dim views on people who killed protected species and the black bear was on the state’s flag. Shit, I might as well kill a bald eagle.
So much for an easy solution. ;) There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list, the Snippet Sunday Facebook group, and the Rainbow Snippets Facebook group. A few of my favorites are, P.T. Wyant, Karen Michelle Nutt, Veronica Scott, Jessica Subject, Kathy Griffith Karysa Faire, and Iris Blobel.
Here's the blurb for DELI'S TAKE OUT:
CPO Eugene “Deli” Rubenovich has hit his limit. After his friend is gravely injured on a mission, Deli takes leave to clear his head. He wants the great outdoors, fresh air, hiking, and maybe a beer or two. What he gets is a 5-on-1 bar fight and cartel thugs trying to forcibly take a woman’s home. And then there’s the bear.
Caroline Atherton has a quiet life she loves as the owner of Last Chance Dog Sanctuary, where she rehabilitates dogs like Sergeant Trace to return to civilian life. When a simple shopping trip goes awry, a handsome Navy Chief winds up nursing a concussion after defending her from a pack of idiot males.
Deli’s not used to being rescued, but the beautiful woman who heals dogs makes it an experience worth repeating. She’s says she’s got no room in her life for pushy men, but the cartel gets nasty, and Caroline needs help defending her home and her dogs.
Enlisting assistance from the Ultimate Recon crew to take out the enemy is just another day for Deli, but to win Caroline’s heart? He’ll need every skill in his arsenal for that mission.
So much for taking a vacation.
