Snippet Sunday - Hot Man and Coffee

8/29/2015

Welcome to the Snippet Sunday on the Weird, the Wild, and the Wicked. Thank you so much for visiting. If you choose to comment today, I really appreciate it. Rimshot's Hard Target, my Bad Boys of Beta Squad/Hot SEALs crossover novella is live. It's available now, but only on Amazon US because it's part of Amazon KindleWorlds, and therefore exclusive.

In this snippet, Jaime Hensen is talking to her best friend Chris Hunter nee Brickman about CPO Rimshot Stanton. Y'all might recognize Chris Brickman from The Navy's Ghost.

“Chief Stanton called me.”

Chris laughed. “Rimshot? Good. I’m glad to hear that. Will you be able to help him?”

“Yeah, I think so. You know how these things go. Could take a week or two, could take years.” Jaime shrugged even though her friend couldn’t see it. “But that’s not why I called. Why didn’t you tell me he smelled so damn good?”

Chris laughed again. “Does he? Usually when I was with him, we all smelled so bad, either from sweat, dirt, or briny seawater that I never noticed.”

“He definitely didn’t smell like that today.” No, he’d smelled like hot man and coffee, and those two things made up her favorite meals. “He also took me out to breakfast.”

“Oh yeah?” Chris sounded amused. “It’s about time.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Hey, I might have been getting married, but I saw how Stanton looked at you that day.”

“A lot of guys ‘looked at me’ that day.”

“Uh-huh, but Stanton never looks at women like that. The man is a glacier.”

Jaime snorted. “A glacier?”

“Yep. Hard, cold, unmoving, and solid. Nothing ever fazes him.”

“I don’t think that’s true.” Not after how he took his frustration with his father out on her. “I think he’s pretty upset about his sister going missing.”

They definitely know two sides to the same man. ;) There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list and in the Snippet Sunday Facebook group. A few of my favorites are Charley Descoteaux, Jeff Tsuruoka, Gem Sivad, Goran Zidar, Veronica Scott, and Sarah Wesson. Here's the blurb for Rimshot's Hard Target:

Navy SEAL sniper Kevin “Rimshot” Stanton has had one thing on his mind for months: Find his sister. When a retired teammate suggests calling a private investigator specializing in missing persons, he takes a chance on the woman he’s lusted after since a friend’s wedding. He hopes she won’t mind mixing business with pleasure, because he wants more than just her professional expertise.

Jaime Hensen isn’t the kind of woman to settle down. She likes the wham-whir-thank-you-sir lifestyle. But the night she spends with Rimshot makes her want more. Too bad he’s a glacier outside the bedroom. She throws all her concentration into the job to ignore the hurt.

When Jaime’s investigation gets too close to a mysterious company hiring only women, she’s kidnapped and Rimshot suspects they’ve taken his sister as well. He’ll need every skill in his arsenal to save them.

Rimshot has one shot to get love right, and he’s not about to miss.

  • Bill Engleson | @billmelaterplea
  • Anne Chowdhury | @TwiAddictAnne
  • Kelly Heinen | @Aightball
  • Louisa Bacio | @Louisabacio
  • David A. Ludwig | @DavidALudwig
  • Cara Michaels | @caramichaels
  • Mary Decker | @mishmhem

Winners Announcement:

Honorable Mentions

Louisa Bacio | @Louisabacio

George says: It was a great little story, I love the inner thought of having to combat fear and that each challenge represents some form of fear to overcome. The story conveys that fear well and yet the resounding cry of those who went before.

David A. Ludwig | @DavidALudwig
George says: The morning after a party where things just don't seem to feel right. Knew something was up but I loved the ending learning that the Fae may not be as skilled at holding a feast for a werewolf. Well done.

Mary Decker | @mishmhem

George says: Having been on the receiving end and giving end of surprises like this, this tale brought back some great memories of those successes and even those near misses. The tale is fun, briefly tense and ends with a smile.

Week 182 Winner
Cara Michaels | @caramichaels

George says:
I was pulled immediately into the scene and felt what the characters had “gone” through. There's some crazy shit happening in town and Carlisle just walked into it. It is well written and tight.

“If it weren’t for the two of you, I’d be dead.” Carlisle swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple straining along his throat. He lifted his hands, and I politely ignored the visible tremor.

“You had a big scare, Matty.” I hugged his arm.

“A big scare? Shit, woman.” He pulled against my hold until I let go. “A scare is a car crash, or a perp getting the drop on me. A crazy waving a gun. This? This shit was in a league I didn’t know existed.”

“Matt, you know what I do.”

“And I support it, Kel,” he said. “I just never expected to get so up close and personal with—” He shuddered. “How do you sleep?”

“I don’t much.”

His bleak gaze settled on me.

“How do you get up every day and leave your home when you know what’s out there?”

“Same way you do,” I said. “With the exception of not actually having a home. But I only occasionally consider walling myself up in a budget hotel room, Amontillado style.”

“I want to build a doomsday bunker.” He ran his hands over his face. “Stock it with anything I can get my hands on over eighty proof and wait it out.”

“This is nothing you haven’t seen before, Matt. You just got to see it a lot closer this time.”

“He pinned me to that wall there.” His eyes slid left. “But it wasn’t me he wanted.”

“Who, then?”

“You, Kelly,” he whispered. “He wanted you.”

Congratulations SIXTEEN TIME WINNER Cara, Louisa, David, and Mary! Don't forget to claim your badges and display them with pride. You certainly earned it!

Pass on the great news on Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus, shiny mirrors, Morse Code, and signal flags. Check out all the original tales HERE. Thanks for stopping by and happy reading! :)

Word of Advice
If you want to be a writer, don't think about writing or talk about writing; WRITE. And never give up on the stories.
