“You’ll take care of things?” Rogan asked, continuing the discussion.
“Aye, I will.” No one ever told the boss no and taking care of *things* was my job after all. No one cheated us without consequences.
The meeting broke up soon after. In the alley behind the pub, I checked the call. “Answer your phone.” Carlene’s voice snarled in the voice mail. “I want you to come over tonight and don’t you dare tell me you can’t. Be here at seven. Or else.”
Well then. That twas easy enough. I’d grown tired of her nagging and demands. I belonged t’no woman, especially not her. I’d made her no promises but she got possessive. I blocked her number and was whistlin’ as I walked in the restaurant a couple of blocks away.
As expected, the place was all but empty. People didn’t come for the food but for the action in the back room—the bettin’ and the drugs. The place was in our territory so they owed a percentage, plus their protection fees. Ol’ McCarthy wasn’t happy t’see me, knowin’ why I was there.
Then I saw the girl. Scared shitless she was, and beaten black n’blue. “She’s comin’ with me, McCarthy. And you’ll be payin’ us double this week.”
I heard the gun cock. A minute later, just the girl an’ me walked out. McCarthy’s was out of business.
