This week I'm offering snippets from TAKE THE REINS, book 1 in the Rifts Series. It's a fantasy romance where the heroine steps across a dimensional boundary and into a world where the Greek myths are reality and humans are the myths. Bethany is being taken to visit the centaur village and there seems to be a discrepancy between who she is and what they think she is.
“Where are we going?” She tried to put a little distance between them now that the creepy white trees had fallen behind.
“To the Council of Elders.”
His answers were as staccato as a Gatling gun. Small bursts of rapid information without much explanation. Bethany tried again.
“What happened? How did I get here? This isn’t Kentucky.”
“I do not know ‘kentukee’. You shouldn’t be here.”
“I know. You’ve said.”
“I thought humans were myths.”
You’re the myth, buster. She stifled a giggle at the thought of the popular TV show. Yeah, I’d like you to disprove this guy.
“I’m real enough. My name is Bethany Stanton. And you are?”
She held out her hand to him to shake and he stared at her as if she’d offered him a snake.
“I will not be enthralled by your magic, human. Until we determine your purpose here and your intent, you shall keep your hands to yourself.”
Amazement slammed into Bethany so hard she stopped walking. The centaur’s longer stride carried him swiftly beyond her and the others behind him parted around her like a rock in a stream. They halted, dropping their pike points toward her in a bristling cavalry pose, and Bethany’s irritation mounted.
“What the hell are you talking about?” She slammed her hands to her hips. “What magic? I don’t have any magic.”
Since when did humans have magic? ;) There are several great authors on the Weekend Writer Warriors list and in the Snippet Sunday Facebook group. A few of my favorites are Charley Descoteaux, Karen Michelle Nutt, Veronica Scott, Gem Sivad, Jessica Subject, and Iris Blobel. Here's the blurb:
Social change is normal for a senator’s daughter, but affecting gender politics in centaurs wasn’t on Bethany’s agenda.
All Bethany Stanton needed was time away to think. She never imagined a walk with her horse might lead her so far from home. When she steps through a rift between worlds at an old archaeological site, she realizes she has bigger problems than marriage to the man of her nightmares. Like a herd of centaurs with distressing views on gender equality and “mythical” humans.
As part of the Supernatural Anomalies Investigative Field Unit, Major Stephen “Mack” McMacken has seen and done more weird stuff than written in a science fiction novel. When called in to track down a U.S. Senator’s missing daughter, Mack figures it’s more a case of runaway rich girl than supernatural mystery. Until his team finds the portal and he’s nearly torched by a dying phoenix.
In a world ruled by mythical beasts, Mack and Bethany find themselves on trial for endangering the centaur village. With the only escape route they know gone, working together to establish their innocence might prove easier than avoiding seductive Sirens and ravenous native beasts.
And then there’s the not-so-simple matter of finding a way back home…
