Authors: this is a great opportunity to spotlight a few lines or even a paragraph or two from a new release or backlisted title. Readers: you get to sample some delicious snippets! We’ll do our best to tease, titillate and tantalize you into the weekend.
Today I'm offering snippets from my newest release The Order of the Dragon, an paranormal romance, and Book 1 in the Warbler Peninsula series. Dr. Aliandra Cantora has stopped by the library to check on Drake and has an opportunity to meet Tom for the first time. For those who stopped by on Sunday, this should explain a little about who Tom is. For those who didn't visit, you can find the snippet HERE.
She turned her attention back to the boy beside her and found him watching her with thoughtful expression on his face. When she’d first come in, she hadn’t felt his presence at all. That’s because you were too caught up in Drake MacGregor. But as soon as she saw Tom, she knew she shared bloodlines with him, however distant.
“I think he likes you, Aliandra,” Tom said softly.
“Do you think so? He’s always trying to get away from me whenever I see him.” She laughed bitterly.
“Well, I like you.” Tom puffed out his chest. “You’re just like my mum.”
The words my mum unleashed all her yearning for a child of her own and she had to shove her recent grief at the loss of her dream down deep. She knew he hadn’t meant her to take it as if she was his mother, but her heart knocked her ribs with sorrow anyway.
“How am I like your mother?”
Tom glanced around them to be sure no one stood nearby then leaned close to her with the intent to whisper. She dropped her head beside his.
“You’re a dragon.” His words flowed no louder than a sibilant hiss, but she caught them clearly, her instinct validated.
“So are you, aren’t you?”
The young dragonet nodded, a secret smile wreathing his lips.
“Where are your parents, Tom?”
Bone-deep sorrow washed across his features.
Fury seared her breath from her lungs and she had to close her eyes and clench her fists for a moment before she did something wholly dragon and torch the building around her. How could that happen? We’re tough and so good at hiding from anyone’s evil ignorance.
“I’m sorry to hear that, Tom.” She tried to smile. “Who is taking care of you now? Drake?”
“Sorry, Mr. MacGregor, I meant.”
“Oh, no.” Tom dragged a nervous finger over the image of an F-15 Eagle flying upside down. “No, I was adopted by a human named Dr. Viggo Lance. He’s doing research here. Are you a professor, too?”
“No, I’m a medical doctor. I try to help people. Where did Dr. Lance find you, Tom?”
“Inverness, Scotland. How do you help people? Do you find them families?”
Aliandra’s throat closed and she had to shake her head a few times before she could speak around the lump the size of the Andes. Dear Goddess, why is everything reminding me of what I can’t have?
