The purpose here is to spotlight a few lines or a few paragraphs from a new release or backlisted title. This way my readers get to sample some delicious snippets and I'll do my best to tease, titillate and tantalize you into the weekend.
I'm teasing with DARWIN'S EVOLUTION, an Ultimate Recon/Hot SEALs Crossover novella that came out in January. In today's tease, retired Navy SEAL Cyrus "Darwin" Finch is calling in reinforcements for the hinkiness going on at Sadie's mom's place.
Alissa McAvoy, Cyrus's computer specialist, arrived first by plane. She stood almost as tall as him, with long blond hair and coke-bottle glasses. She spoke softly and carried a big-damn electronic stick. In person, she remained reserved and watchful, but online, she could roast anyone and frequently did.
“Hey Alissa, how was the trip?” Cyrus collected her gear from the baggage carousel as she slung her laptop bag over her shoulder.
“Good. Quiet. You do know you’re supposed to be on vacation, right?” She offered him her beauty-queen smile as she pushed her glasses up her nose.
“Heh, that’s what people keep tellin’ me, but then friends get in trouble and I just can’t let it go.”
Alissa nodded. “Tell me what you think is going on.”
He filled her in on the drive to Williams and by the time they arrived, a black leather and chrome Harley that could only belong to Viking sat in the drive. He’d texted from the last job site in Phoenix and some of Cyrus’s tension fled. Having Viking there to back him up made everything better.
“No one else coming? Not R&R this time?” Alissa raised an eyebrow as they got out of the car.
“No. Ray left Rosalia in charge with Brian on nights. Viking called this morning to say he’d be coming up.” Cyrus led the way into the house and found his supposition correct.
Rosalia “R&R” Rodriguez had been an Army Ranger, and still served in the Reserves. She was a damn fine infiltrator as well as sharpshooter. He would’ve liked to have her around, but someone needed to hold down the fort with Maddy. Sadie looked up as they came in and her smile warmed his chest more than he thought possible. She nodded her head to Cyrus and Alissa.
“Afternoon. I’m Sadie and this is my mother, Clarice.” Sadie waved a knife as she chopped vegetables for the stew cooking on the stove. “How was your trip?”
“Good, thank you.” Alissa dipped her head in acknowledgment as she set down her laptop bag. “My name’s Alissa McAvoy. It’s very nice to meet you.”
“Do you need help with your ten thousand bags, Alissa?” Ray sat at the table with one ankle balanced on his opposite knee. He smirked at her through his blond beard, his brown eyes twinkling.
Alissa stuck her tongue out. “I wouldn’t need so much stuff if I knew you all wouldn’t break some of it, Viking.”
Ray shook his head and his ponytail swung over his back. “I wouldn’t break it if the Chair Force didn’t make it so damn fragile.”
“It’s not my fault you Army grunts are too clumsy to take care of delicate electronics.” Alissa rolled her eyes. “But I learned a long time ago you’re just as much a barbarian as your nickname suggests.”
Ray laughed. “Guilty as charged.”
Sadie chuckled. “Viking is still a better nickname than the one given to me in the Corps.”
Cyrus raised his eyebrows. “Which was?”
Viking snorted. “You don’t look like a hardass now.”
“I’m retired.” Sadie winked and Cyrus laughed.
“But we all know marines never really retire.”
