The purpose here is to spotlight a few lines or a few paragraphs from a new release or backlisted title. This way my readers get to sample some delicious snippets and I'll do my best to tease, titillate and tantalize you into the weekend.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Welcome back. This week I'm teasing from THE VALKYRIE'S SWORD, an upcoming paranormal romance. It should be out to you this month! Balder is a recovering assassin from the Sword of God, a fanatical religious group bent on killing anything sentient and non-human. If you've read ORDER OF THE DRAGON, it's the same folks as in that tale. Tiffany is the ghost of the last werewolf he killed.
“For the love of God, where are you dragging me now?”
Balder planted his feet in the mud along the side of road they’d traveled for the last two days and squeezed his hands into fists. Righteous rage rolled through him as he glared at his companion. Voices from his past, screaming and egging him on, filled his mind with fury and he wanted to roar across the rain-filled landscape.
Tiffany turned, stared at him with hollow eyes, and drifted straight through him.
Searing cold dismantled the hot fury and drained it away. Despair, shame, guilt and regret flooded in its wake, and Balder moaned as he dropped to his knees.
:You have no place to demand anything, Balder “Vengeance” Templar. We are only on this journey because of you.: Her words held the frigidity of her essence, but her eyes blazed.
“I’m trying to get better, Tiffany. I’m trying to help you.” He mumbled it into his chest as the rain pattered down on his backpack, but he knew she could hear him.
:Trying to help me?: She scoffed with a deepening scowl. :You’re hoping to get rid of me so I can leave you to forget what you’ve done, to ignore the hurt you’ve caused, to dismiss the heinous acts you’ve committed. Oh no, Balder. I’m here until you’ve made amends.:
“I’m sorry, Tiffany.”
She snorted. :Not enough yet, you’re not.:
He squeezed his eyes closed as the memories of his past as an elite Blade to the Sword of God flashed through his mind. He’d infiltrated communities, seeking out the inhuman residents, and killed them, sometimes stealthily, sometimes violently. Tiffany Lupin, his erstwhile fiancée, had been the last one to die before he realized he’d made a mistake. And she never hesitated to remind him.
“I’m trying to change.” He did want to change, but he didn’t want to feel the pain, remorse, and guilt anymore.
:Shall I remind you what you said the night you murdered me and my family?: Her eyes grew cavernous and her face whitened out until she appeared like a wraith with nothing but blackened eye sockets. :You said, and I quote, “My true name is Vengeance! You are the infection and this town must be cured. I will cleanse this town of your taint and humanity will be free.” Cleanse, Balder, like the evil hadn’t come to our town with you.:
